Curriculum for Grade 9 Health: Human Sexuality

This unit starts Monday, October 16, 2006 and will last approximately five 75 minute periods. There will be two rotations with 1/2 of each class participating in judo lessons with Sensei Miller while the other 1/2 of the class participates in health classes.

The following objectives will be covered in this unit:

1. Identify the developmental stages of sexuality throughout life

2. Describe the factors that lead to responsible sexual relationships

3. Describe the relative effectiveness of preventing pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases

4. Demonstrate understanding of how to use decision-making and assertiveness skills effectively to promote healthy sexuality

5. Demonstrate an understanding of the pressure on teens to be sexually active

6. Identify community support services related to sexual health concerns

The objectives might not be covered in the order listed. Students are expected to bring their computers, a pen, and a notebook to each class.

Some of the topics under discussion are of a sensitive nature. Students are expected to deal with issues in a mature fashion, and to respect the feelings and opinions of their peers.
