Nilhean Devonstrae
From Reydala
Nilhean first joined the guild but five years ago, on what was his first visit to the main Guild office in Todare. He was born and raised in Elshing and had scarcely ventured outside its borders until then. His former employment was as a fisherman, and from all reports a fairly good one, however after his boat was splintered int he storm, he decided it was time well enough to move on. He made the trip to Todare with what savings he had on more or less a whim, tagging along on one of the trade caravans.
At the time, he was considering joining the army to just get away and see more of the world. He hadn't heard much about the guild during his stay in Elshing, he had thought they were just another division of the republican guard. When he saw the guild offices at the recruitment center at Todare, he had another one of his whims, shuffling his feet right inside. The more he learned about the guild the more appealing it seemed, much different from the quiet, slow, fishing life in Elshing.
During his first few years he was under the mentorship of a fellow member, Clair Nolatari. The two traveled to many missions around todare, most often ferrying dignitaries this way and that all around Nuln. On one such mission, they were assigned to guard one of the engineering faculty from Kasser on a voyage to Crossamar to oversee a restoration of the bridge there. All in all, a routine mission to a tee.
Nilhean and Clair rode at the head of the formation, keeping a watch for any potential ambushes along the road as a long train of wagons carrying equipment and metals followed behind them.
"...Feels like I've been walking this road back and forth for two years now, it's not too different from fishing..." Nilhean yawned.
"I wouldn't know..." Clair mumbled, just as bored.
"Like in fishing, you'd sometimes go out and everything would get stormy, just like that, then everything's going crazy! It was exciting!"
"You don't want that kind of excitement here, it could get you killed."
"...Well that's what makes it exciting now don't it? Then there were times where you'd be out on the oceans for hours and hours, not even catching anything, calm seas, the sun slowly raising into the sky and turning the waves amber..."
"You talk about fishing alot..."
"It's a metaphor."
"...You sure you don't just miss fishing?"
"Fishing? Gods no! Bloody drudgery that was, either you were fighting for your life or you were bored lifeless. S'why I joined the guild!"
Clair looked back toward the path. "You realize you're going to be walking this same path over and over again in the future..."
"Maybe you will, I've got plans!"
"...plans now?"
Nilhean nodded. "The good missions start once you get promoted, then you get to do all the super secret espionage save-the-world type stuff.. So I just have to get promoted."
Clair turned toward him. "The way you talk is like you think one's just around the corner... I'm a rank above you and I'm still walking this damn road, you know.."
"That's because you didn't reach out and grasp it! Everyone loves a hard worker! If you show them you can do the menial stuff they'll give you more interesting work!"
"...You're just making this all up to cope with boredom aren't you?"
Nilhead folded his arms behind his head, giving an audible sigh. "...Maybe"
"You're right though, promotions come to those who want it bad enough... Mmm, do I really want one is the question..."
"...Eh?... Why wouldn't you want one? You're just as bored as I am!"
"Exactly, this work is easy money. I don't want to put my life on the line everyday you know. That's why I still do these missions now and then."
"You chose to do this mission?..."
"That's right, why not?"
Nilhean crossed his arms. "You'll never get promoted that way, you have to show them flair, constantly ask for the hardest missions available!..."
"...Is that what you would do?"
"Gods no! That would be such a hassle!"
Clair smiled, she had long grown used to these rather nonsensical exchanges. Nilhean was always like this when the tedium was getting to them, lightening the mood and providing some amusement when the mission wouldn't cooperate. He never seemed to take himself too seriously, that in itself was a blessing to those around him.
Promotions came and promotions went, and soon enough both of them had been transferred to the Freehaven department, dealing regularly with gold-class missions. It was always strange to Clair how much Nilhean changed with situations. When the chips were down he was your hardened soldier, when action was light he was everyone's favorite jester.
Clair would later come to attribute this to him growing up mostly on his own in a small coastal village. Nontheless, he was a good strange to have around...
