Jesstria Kian
From Reydala
Jesstria, Kavim, and Sten were out on a stealth mission in Freehaven, observing one of the local slumlords who had been rumored of taking some shady deals. Each of them stood on a rooftop overlooking the poor section of the city, in particular an alleyway near their targets abode, as they day went on they witnessed many deals of questionable legality, but these were the jurisdiction of the town guard. They were after larger fish.
"This is a waste of time," Kavim whirled his dagger about in his hands absent-mindedly as he sat against the edge of the roof. "If the guy's our target, let's just storm his place and get 'im."
"Ya can't go and bring someone to justice without seeing some evidence... It's the guild's responsibility to verify all claims they receive" Sten yawned, "Maybe we should call it a day though, we've been here so long... Maybe someone tipped 'im off to stay inside today."
"Don't go blaming that one on me"
Sten smiled, "Of course not... still, it's weird that we haven't seen him leave his house yet..."
Jesstria stood closest to the ledge, staring out over the alleyway alertly. "...We're not exactly remaining hidden with his incessant jabbering, I wouldn't be suprised if it was his fault"
Kavim returned the dagger to the holster at his side, putting his hands behind his head. "Hey, If they're gonna sit me down for five hours on top of a damn rooftop I'm going to make my own entertainment."
Jesstria sighed exasperatedly. "Every word out of your mouth could leave us stranded here for another hour, Shut up!"
Kavim grinned, he enjoyed pressing people's buttons. "You're the one raising your voice!"
Sten only gave a wry smile and watched the exchange back and forth, the fights between the two had doomed many of these stealthy missions. Nontheless the trio were some of the guild's finest in the art of not being seen, and hence, kept getting more assignments together. Kavim was the brash new recruit, Jesstria wasn't much longer with the guild than Kavim, but she always remained professional... Except when Kavim starts goading her.
Kavim continued again. "I'm only here anyway since the guild told me to, that's what earns my keep. I'm sure you could handle watching the various bits of alley trash blow about well enough alone."
Jesstria briefly thought that she would have liked nothing better. "Yeah yeah, we all know you're just here for your money... The fact that you keep endangering the mission and hence your paycheck speaks volumes of your stupidity..."
Kavim shrugged, insults always seemed to roll off him like water. "Well, if you aren't here for the money, Why are you here then?! You don't seem like the good will charity type."
Jesstria turned toward Kavim. "Who said I wasn't here for the money?! I just have an ounce of pride in my work!"
Kavim laughed. "Pride?...you just spent five hours on a rooftop! Ooh, you better get a plaque for this one to hang on your wall."
Jesstria was becoming more angry. "Don't you care about your job at all?! What if the guild fires you? What would you do then!?"
Kavim seemed to mull it over a bit. "Mmm, I guess I'd wander around a bit on my own for awhile, chance to see the world n' all!... Another chapter in the book of Kavim, filled with tight escapes, epic battles, and beautiful women!"
Jesstria stared blankly for a moment. "...You really don't care, do you?"
Kavim grinned widely. "Not one bit."
Jesstria turned back to the alleyway, inside herself a bit jealous of Kavim's carefree attitude. She needed the guild, needed her job, her well-being depended on it. She had nothing else besides the guild. She was driven out of Riscana when she was but twelve years old after they discovered her heritage. She struggled through the wilderness for over a year, surviving on what food she could find or kill with the bow she had left home with. When she finally was able to cross the border into Nuln, she traded her green jungle for one of rock and metal. She had never learned a trade, so without friends or family she was forced to live on the streets.
The guild was a way for her to put the skills she learned in those horrible years to use. Thanks to the guild she had began to claw herself back up, buy herself a small home, start living with some amount of comfort. She couldn't go back to the streets again, she wouldn't... So on each and every assignment she performed to the best of her ability. She held herself to a standard of perfection. Every job her reputation was on the line, her future with the guild that allowed her to live.
Kavim looked up at the starry sky above. "Well, if you are here for the money then, I guess we have some common ground."
Jesstria turned back to the alley, muttering. "In the same way that the ocean and the land share a few stretches of coast..."
Kavim sat up a bit, stretching his arms. "...Is that like the saying, opposites attract?"
Jesstria glared ahead, saying shortly as she shook her head. "It's not...and they most definitely do not!"
The three would remain on that rooftop until the sun rose up above their heads. They would later learn that their target was nowhere in the city at all that night. A quirk of fate brought on by confused communications between guild and client. Nontheless, they all received minor pay cuts that night due to "Unnecessary noise leading to the endangerment of mission goals".
