[edit] The Setting

Reign of Terror begins on the 24th of February 1934, a few weeks after an integralist coup in France (as a part of the February 6th Crisis). At this point, the world is vastly different from real life. The Russian Civil War has come to a ceasefire after years and years of indecisive fighting, anarchism has gained ground and reached nation-level adaptations and the Wall Street crash has brought the world economy to its knees. China has split. Authoritanianism is taking over Europe. Germany is democratic, France is authoritanian. No one is safe, the war might come at any time from any direction. The world is living a dark time and anarchy, chaos and radicalism is ruling over the world. It is a true reign of Terror.

[edit] Development

Development of Reign of Terror began in May 2010 as an idea to make an alternate history mod for Arsenal of Democracy. The alternate-history modifications had mostly been left to the background, with only Kaiserreich being a popular mod. The original idea was to create a whole new world history, with the earliest points of diversion being in the 17th century. This idea was later abandoned, as it might have caused too much confusion and discouraged people to try out the mod. The timeline was rewritten a grand total of 7 times, with each timeline having less and less pre-1900 content. When Darkest Hour was announced in September 2010, the modding platform was switched mainly due to the incredible modding support Darkest Hour offers compared to other HoI2-based games.

The final form of timeline was born when discussion began on the alternate history forums around an interesting subject: the First Balkan War escalating to a European conflict. After weeks of research and discussion, the RoT timeline got its starting point: 1912. Quite quickly the timeline expanded, and soon it covered all of the Great War. At this point, the mod was announced at the Paradox Interactive forums, under a project name "Imperial Gamble".
