You make it back to the path and continue on

You follow the path for what seems like miles. The sun crawls across the sky. It's scorching hot. Somewhere along the way you ate your apples. It seems like ages ago and your stomach is growling. Just as you begin to despair of the path ever taking you anywhere, the wind changes, and you can smell smoke. You scan the horizon, and can see grey smoke hovering in the distance. You quicken your pace, overwhelmed by curiosity. As you draw nearer, the faint outline of buildings appear in the haze. Your stomach knots, either in fear or excitement.
When you arrive at the buildings, you can see that they were once the small houses of a small village. But now, they are the smoldering remains. It seems to be deserted.
