To the forrest

As you follow the dirt path towards the forest, you notice that it suddenly starts to feel cooler as you approach the trees on the outskirts. As you enter the foliage, the temperature plummets, causing you to begin shivering violently. Continuing on, you wonder if you should've taken the path towards the sun-drenched meadow; it wouldn't be so cold there. You turn around, only to see that the path behind you has been swallowed up by gnarled trees, which ominously seem to be following you. Trying not to think about such absurdities, you continue on. The appendage on your head, which began to wilt the minute you entered the forest, has now perked up, and you realize that the temperature, while still wintry, does not bother you as much. You come to a clearing eventually, leading off west, at the end of which appears to be a smoke trail in the sky. In front of you, the forest path stretches on northwards, no end in sight.
Which direction do you choose?
West, towards the smoke trail, there must be something causing it.
