Exit the lift back to the other room

You slide the cage open easily and find yourself back in the dimly lit stone room. You've just left the elevator and have no intention of returning there for now. The staircase ascends around its spiral up into darkness and the large steel door stands firm against one wall.
Which do you take
It must lead outside, right?
