[edit] The Plot and Premise

One year ago, in a paper factory in Odessa, Texas, a deadly virus was released. It quickly spread through the world in a pandemic that no one could stop. By the time it finally ran its course, over 99.99% of the world's population was dead.* No one knows for sure whether the virus was released on purpose or accident except Adam Monroe, though suspicions and speculation abound among the survivors. All that is known for certain is that Adam went into the vault to fetch the virus to, he claims, bring it to Peter Petrelli to destroy with his power. Once in there, he was confronted by Hiro Nakamura who teleported him away. In the moment between Hiro's touch and their disappearance, Adam dropped the vial.

Adam has maintained with a fierce determination that it was an accident, that he was startled by Hiro's grabbing him and that his hand slipped. He has worked tirelessly in the past year, offering up much of his blood to those ill, saving as many as he could, though the virus moves so quickly that it still was an apocalyptic disaster beyond any Earth has seen since the Flood. As the man with the cure, and the oldest man alive, Adam was able to consolidate power, forming a working community in what was once Seattle, but has now been renamed Eden.

The world's governments have all fallen. There are no restaurants except what enterprising people have set up to feed survivors and travelers. The modern conveniences have disappeared for the most parts, though Adam is working hard to reestablish a working communications system in Eden. But without anyone to maintain them, towers and satellites are falling into disrepair. The supply chains for all necessities have been disrupted and destroyed with no one to man them and must be rebuilt from the ground up as stores are depleted.

Teams scour the Earth, as best they can, to find survivors and bring them to Eden where there is at least a rough infrastructure in place, with power and clean water and the beginnings of an agricultural system to feed people. Radio broadcasts--the only world-wide telecommunications system left in place--go out regularly calling the world's survivors to make their way to Eden to find shelter, to find aid and to start again. Others travel empty highways in trucks, bringing as many non-perishable items as possible to Eden to share among the people there while they rebuild the world.

But Adam's power, necessary as it has been, is not solid. Factions have risen up against him, believing he is the cause of all their suffering and wanting to depose him from the seat of power he has gained. Old enemies and new friends join together, slowly choosing sides, as the straggling survivors try to find the balance between survival and power and the new world threatens to fall into the further upheaval of a civil war.
