Special Agent Chris Lipton is an original character who joined Realm of the Muse in November 2007. He is the Special Agent In Charge of the FBI's Special Cases Unit (SCU), a small division based out of Sonoma, California that handles cases that fall outside of the scope of standard FBI work, either because they're deemed irrelevant or beneath the Bureau. Overworked and undermedicated, Chris deals with the frustrations and quirks of an eventful life...though not necessarily well.

He is portrayed by Andrew McCarthy and since 2001 has been the hero of the virtual television series (later developed into a feature film), Negativeland.

Personal Life

Born Christopher Michael Lipton, the forty-three year old Chris is the only child of Rick and Denise Lipton. He states that he has always had a strong sense of public service and that the only thing he ever wanted to be was a federal agent.

Chris was born and raised in Sonoma, California. He is still close to his family, taking his duties as a husband and a son very seriously, and maintaining a good relationship with his sister-in-law, Tricia Clarke (Lola Glaudini). While he hasn't said no to the idea of kids, he believes he's too old and that he wouldn't want to inflict himself on any children.

When he was at the beginning of his FBI career Chris went to a gallery opening and met Holly Clarke. Two years later, they were married, and they have been together for fourteen years. Holly (Sabrina Lloyd) is the love of Chris's life and his constant support, even helping him to achieve closure on some of his cases. She is also the only person who can honestly intimidate Chris's archrival, fellow FBI agent Brian Farrell.

Chris is deeply committed to the trio of agents who make up his team: Kyle Singler (Steven Culp), Analise Lawrence (Jennifer Morrison), and his best friend and loyal partner, David Taylor (Desmond Harrington).

Professional Life

Chris is the Special Agent In Charge of the Special Cases Unit (SCU). While little of the division's history is known, it shares the FBI's Sonoma Field Annex (a smaller field office) with at least the Fugitive Unit. The SCU takes cases that do not qualify for standard FBI attention, either because they are trivial, irrelevant, or just backlogged. This often means they tackle cases of the stupid, foolish or completely irrational.

Lipton's life is complicated by two people: his supervisor, Brady Nichols (Greg Grunberg), a bureaucrat a decade younger who is half as experienced and often preoccupied with administrative tasks, and Brian Farrell (Mark Harmon), the anal-retentive chief of the Fugitive Unit who is Lipton's longtime rival and continual sparring partner.

Slightly making things easier is FBI receptionist and office manager Vincent Eisen (Fred Goss), whose glib running commentary on the events of the day tends to lighten the mood. It is Vincent, however, who has given Chris the unwanted nickname 'Sparky' behind his back.

Chris maintains friendships with all of his agents, in different ways. David is like a brother to him. Kyle is the experienced one whom Chris trusts to run the office when they're not there. Analise is the newest agent, with somewhat of a crush on David, but whose baked goods help keep Chris sane. The agents often play Risk at the office after hours, but more than one game has been stopped by an argument over the lack of modernization, such as whether or not airplanes could be landed in countries.

Personality

It is important to note that despite being high-strung, overstressed, and often times on edge, Chris does not suffer from any mental disease or defect. He has a genius IQ and simply a more left of center look at the world. In addition, he has no fear voicing the things more polite people might not, or doing things that other people might not do.

He is rarely concerned about society's view of him or what other people might want for him, but not to the point where he is an active antagonist. While he can have a temper and sometimes be cranky, at heart he is a good man who cares about the people around him and has a genuine belief in the justice system. His actions are never intentionally meant to hurt anyone and with the exception of Brian Farrell he does not say anything to wound anyone, either.

Due to his close ties to his family, Chris harbors a soft spot for the families of witnesses and suspects on his cases. He feels they should not be dragged into their loved ones' mistakes, and becomes irritated when they are.

Miscellaneous

In Episode 3, "Evaluation Day," Chris begins seeing federal psychiatrist Dr. Julia Dennington (played by Reiko Aylesworth). Though the two are complete opposites who disagree on almost every count, Chris continues with their sessions if only to give himself a more healthy environment to vent in.
