Squib

From Reach

A squib is a viscious little native creature often found in the equitorial regions. They are named for the sound they make when traveling across the hardened lava and glass commonly found in that area.

Squibs are roughly 9 inches tall and 1 foot wide. Their bodies form a square, with a leg coming out of each corner. They do not show a preference for a front, instead travelling in whatever direction behooves them at the time. Their upper bodie consists of a thick (1 cm+) shell of bone. This shields them from the intense heat overhead. Their legs are not well muscled, as they are largely bone as well. The bottom 6" of each leg are solid masses of bone meant to protect the creature from the intense heat of the desert floor, which can melt sand into glass. The only area of their body that is not heavily armored is the underside, which houses a 7" long mouth and a nasty handful of teeth. Their bite is viscious, and can penetrate thin metal or thick bone.

Squibs appear to be omniverous, although vastly prefering meat. They scramble slowly over the desert at approximately 4 meters a minute, easily outrunnable by humans. In addition, they pose little danger to the cautious due to the fact that they can only bite things below them: This discovery led to the sadistic sport of squibbing.

No sensory organs have yet been discovered on squibs. It is thought that they sense others by a form of echolocation, emulating sound.
