-- OBJECTIVES:  The purpose of the fellowship is to provide research
space and an environment conducive to writing and reflection to
scholars working on research projects in the area of religion and
society.  The sponsor welcomes applications from all disciplinary
backgrounds for projects that meet its mandate of promoting the
scholarly study of religion in relation to any and all aspects of
society and culture, both contemporary and historical. Topics may
include, but are not limited to, examinations of religious themes
within the areas of ethics, health, law, environment, technology,
government and public policy, human conflict, art, literature, the
media, and currents and debates in philosophy and the natural
sciences.

-- ELIGIBILITY: Eligible applicants include: Canadian and international scholars;
emeritus scholars; new scholars; and scholars on sabbatical leave from
their regular academic appointments.

-- FUNDING: The fellowship includes office space. Two to five fellowships are
offered annually.

humanities and related social sciences.

-- OBJECTIVES:  The aim of this program is to offer teams of two or
more scholars the opportunity to collaborate intensively on a single,
substantive project. Each project should: Provide release time to
pursue collaborative research; Yield tangible research outcomes, such
as joint publications, web projects, or other collaboratively produced
projects. Appropriate fields of specialization include but are not
limited to: American studies; anthropology; archaeology; art and
architectural history; classics; economics; film; geography; history;
languages and literatures; legal studies; linguistics; musicology;
philosophy; political science; psychology; religious studies;
rhetoric, communication, and media studies; science, technology, and
medicine studies; sociology; and theater, dance, and performance
studies. Proposals in the social science fields listed above are
eligible only if they employ predominantly humanistic approaches
(e.g., economic history, law and literature, political theory).
Proposals in interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary studies are
welcome, as are proposals focused on any geographic region or on any
cultural or linguistic group.

-- ELIGIBILITY: A collaborative project is constituted of at least two scholars who
are each seeking salary-replacement stipends for six to twelve
continuous months of supported research leave to pursue full-time
collaborative research during the fellowship tenure. The Project
Coordinator must have an appointment at a U.S.-based institution of
higher education; other project members may be at institutions outside
the United States or may be independent scholars. All project
collaborators must hold a Ph.D. degree or its equivalent in
publications and professional experience at the time of
application.

-- FUNDING: The fellowships are for a total period of up to 24 months, to be
initiated between July 1, 2011 and September 1, 2013, and provide
salary replacement for each collaborator (based on academic rank: up
to $35,000 for Assistant Professor; up to $40,000 for Associate
Professor; and up to $60,000 for full Professor) as well as up to
$20,000 in collaboration funds (which may be used for such purposes as
travel, materials, or research assistance). The amount of the ACLS
fellowship for any collaborative project will vary depending on the
number of collaborators, their academic rank, and the duration of the
research leave, but will not exceed $140,000 for any one project. Up
to seven awards will be made under this competition.

-- SYNOPSIS:  The sponsor each year grants awards ranging from $500
to $5000 to support projects proposed by members of the sponsor's
organization and selected by the Research Grants Review Committee.

-- OBJECTIVES:  Collaborative grants are intended to stimulate
cooperative research among scholars in different institutions, with a
focus on a clearly identified research project. They may also be used
for interdisciplinary work with scholars outside the field of
religion, especially when such work shows promise of continuing beyond
the year funded. Collaborative project proposals are expected to
describe plans for having the results of the research published.

-- ELIGIBILITY: Qualifications include: Project director must be a current
AAR member who has been in good standing for the previous three years;
Applicants will not be considered who have received an AAR Research
Award in the previous five years; and Applicants must have completed
the doctorate.

-- FUNDING: Awards range from $500 to $5000.
