It’s been lost in other issues the last two weeks, but Manning has suddenly hit the slump that so many of his critics expected him to have. He was playing like an MVP, and his 400-yard game in Dallas was his second in three weeks. The last two weeks he completed just 47.8% of his passes (32 of 67) for 482 yards, a touchdown and four interceptions. That’s a passer rating of just 51.9. But like Pierre-Paul, he can be a one-man wrecking crew if he gets loose. Diehl needs to contain him, and so does RT Kareem McKenzie when Ware flips sides. The Giants’ biggest key to this game will be giving Manning time to throw, and Ware, who ranks second in the NFL in sacks (a half-sack behind Minnesota’s Jared Allen) is the man who can knock the Giants quarterback off his game. 4. Put the “cover” back in “coverage” The lingering image from the Giants’ 37-34 win was of S Antrel Rolle being “barbecued” (as NBC’s Cris Collinsworth so eloquently put it) on a 50-yard touchdown catch by Dez Bryant. Actually, the more telling image was of Rolle, Corey Webster and Deon Grant talking after the play trying to figure out what went wrong.
Sadly, that’s an image we’ve seen much of this season. They fixed that problem against the Jets, but a lot of that had to do with the Giants’ revived pass rush and Mark Sanchez’s inability to exploit the secondary. It won’t be as easy against the Cowboys, who not only have a top quarterback, but a speedy WR trio in Bryant, Laurent Robinson and Miles Austin, plus tight end Jason Witten. The Giants need to simplify their coverage schemes and make sure they play them right. The first round of the 800 commences Friday, with Cain the 31st seed out of 32 runners.
Cain may have the body of a cue stick, but go ahead and try to keep up with her as she’s laying down a 62.5-second 400 meters, as she did this spring to finish up a meet-record four-minute, 39-second mile at the Penn Relays. She wasn’t much slower last weekend in Indianapolis, where she won the national 1,500 title with a time of 4:14.74 at the USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships ― just .24 seconds off Jordan Hasay’s U.S. junior record.
It’s the fastest time by a junior in the world this year.
“That’s big-league. That’s what the big girls do,” said David Monti, a consultant to the New York Road Runners club and the editor and publisher of Race Results Weekly.
Cain’s title in Indianapolis qualified her for the world junior championships in Barcelona next month, when she’ll be joined by another local running phenom, Ajee Wilson, a senior from Neptune, N.J.
Wilson will also be running the 800 at the trials, widely regarded as the most fiercely competitive track meet in the world.
A former competitive swimmer, Cain served notice of her track potential as a seventh grader, running 5:12 in the 1,600 meters in the New York Relays at Icahn Stadium at Randall’s Island.
“I didn’t even know what (that time) meant,” Cain said.
It meant Cain was very fast ― and that she wouldn’t be swimming for a whole lot longer.
Cain has already won two Class B state cross-country championships, and earlier this month, won both the state and federation 1,500 titles in Syracuse, finishing in 4:19.78. After the four-hour drive home, she went to the Bronxville High track and did a workout.
“She’s willing to go above and beyond whatever you ask her to do,” said Ed Stickles, one of her coaches at Bronxville, a long-standing prep running powerhouse. mens moncler jacket “That work carries through with everything she does in her life.”
Cain is a 4.0 student, and will be the sports editor of the school paper next fall.
