I went from never really feeling pain, unless I did some boneheaded thing or ran too far, to feeling pain, daily. I went from that mom that ran outside with her kids, daily - soccer, football, baseball -whatever, bring it - to being out of breath by the time I made it past deck. I gained weight, first, from all the steroids, then dropped it, in an unbelievable way. I went from working with my husband on his cars, to sitting and watching,always sick too my stomach or just too tired to hand him a tool that he needed, because that's what we do, help each other. I didn't need help with my business, but then had to hire someone because it was just too much, I eventually sold it, that was difficult.
Outwardly, cancer isn't kind. I've said is on here before. I'm lucky, I favor my mother, in looks and I think she is beautiful. I don't hold a candle to her, but I favor her. If I EVER was hung up in outward appearances, I never will be again. I went from that healthy glow to pasty white, then to some other form of white that I don't think is in the dictionary. At first, I tried the wig. I had a good wig, but it still looked like some dead animal on my head, so I went to the ball cap, scarves and bandannas. No hair. Can you believe that something like no hair could freak so many people out?
Around the house, I didn't and don't always wear a cap or scarf. My son was scared at first, so I wore one all the time. Now, he had to go through chemo, as well, so he understands it more and it doesn't bother him, but my neighbors, well, that's another story. My neighbor to the left, it didn't bother her, she's been through chemo. She never said a word, she complimented me on not having a pointy head, we both laughed. My neighbor to the right, well, she sent her husband over asking my husband to ask me to wear a hat, it made her uncomfortable,My husband had a few choice words for both of them and really wanted me to sit outside without the hat, but it hurt, a lot. It's cancer, I didn't murder someone in cold blood, I had one cell mutate and continue to mutate and got sick, how the heck can I control that??
