John claimed it was based on this drawing his son Julian made of this girl Lucy, in the sky, with diamonds. But that's bullshit. The initials spell it out: Lucy (in the) Sky (with) Diamonds. It's about acid.

It's about as psyche-freaking-delic as you can get. Practically the trippiest song ever. "Picture yourself on a boat in a river with tangerine trees and marmalade skies." Does that sound like an innocent child's drawing? No. It sounds like John was tripping out and wrote a song about it. But, after all, who doesn't love the girl with kaleidoscope eyes?

Widely considered a masterpiece of psychedelia and one of the most accessible songs on Sgt. Pepper's. Plenty of awful cover versions have been done, including one by Elton John backed up by John himself. But only the Beatles could capture that feeling of drifting away through a land of plasticine porters and rocking horse people.
