There are three sorts of odd instruments:
- Members of instrument families all of whose members are odd. Such a family is an odd family. A rothphone, any rothphone, is odd. (Category:Category 1 instruments)
- Odd members of instrument families one or more of whose members are mundane. Such a family is a mundane family. The clarinet family isn't odd, because it includes (e.g.) the mundane Bb soprano clarinet, but the octocontrabass clarinet certainly is odd. (Category:Category 2 instruments)
- Odd instances of normally mundane instruments. The baritone sax isn't odd -- unless it's a straight one. (Category:Category 3 instruments)
Instruments herein are described as Category 1, 2, or 3, accordingly.
