Introduction
Craiglockhart Campus Library holds the core collection of hospitality and tourism books, but related stock may also be located at Merchiston (building, computing and design) Books are arranged according to the Dewey Decimal Classification scheme. A shelf label is allocated to each book so that books on the same topic tend to be found together on the shelves. Some classification numbers worth checking are:
- Accounting for hospitality - 657.837
- Beverages - 641.2
- Catering - 647.95
- Catering industry - 338.476424
- Computers for hospitality - 647.940285
- Cooking - 641.5
- Food - 641.3
- Front office - 647.94068
- Heritage management - 363.69
- Hospitality management - 647
- Hotel design (architecture) - 728.5
- Hotel design (interior) - 747.885
- Hotel management - 647.94068
- Hotel marketing - 647.940688
- Human resource management for hospitality - 647.2
- Resort design - 725.8
- Restaurant design (architecture) - 725.71
- Restaurant design (interior) - 747.8571
- Restaurant management - 647.95068
- Table service - 642
- Theme parks (design) - 725.76
- Tourism - 338.4791
- Visitor management - 338.4791
- Wine - 641.22
These are just a selection of useful numbers. Use the catalogue to find more specific results.
You can use the "Classmark..begins with" option to type in a classification number, e.g. 647.95 and the catalogue will list all the books at that number. If you type in a number with a question mark at the end, e.g. 647.95?, you will see a list of related numbers for similar subjects.
Journals relating to Hospitality, Tourism & Leisure Management are also held at Craiglockhart Library. There are also lots available electronically.
Electronic Resources
The Library subscribes to various electronic resources which cover the Hospitality, Tourism & Leisure Management subject area. A full list of all Business and Law databases can be found on the Databases page, however here are those which are of most use to Hospitality, Tourism & Leisure Management students.
Both of these give access to full text market research reports on a variety of industries, countries and consumer goods. Very good for finding things like visitor numbers, tourist numbers, where tourists are coming from, where they are going. Great demographic information telling which section of the population is spending what on their holidays, how well the UK Wine market is doing etc etc
For academic journal articles, I would recommend the following databases:
The EBSCO Psychology and Behavioural Sciences Collection is a good source for articles on consumer behaviour.
Nexis UK is a good source for country and market information, as well as getting information about individuals. Nexis UK is also home to our electronic newspaper holdings. Virtually all UK newspapers are available from Nexis UK, as well as newspapers from around the Globe e.g. US, Canada, France, Germany, Italy
All of the major newspapers carry relevant company, country and industry information. Of particular value is the Financial Times which regularly produces country and industry surveys.
The Institute of Hospitality website gives students access to the Institute's collection of e-books and e-journals.
