Gunnlandia
From Nseurope
The Gunnish Free Libertarian Republic, often called simply "the Republic" in official dialogue, is a large Scanian nation stretching from the Myrth Channel to the North Sea. The northern extremities of Kvaerness are among the coldest, most inhospitable reaches of Europe. It is also Europe's first self-described revolutionary libertarian republic, and the birthplace of Carsonist political ideology. This phenomenon has greatly affected the Republic's standing on the continent.

[edit] Climate
Gunnlandia has a cold Scanian climate, particularly in the northern region of Kvaerness, locally called "the Reach". Kvaerness has two, widely divergent main seasons. Spring and autumn are merely brief transitions between temperate summers and frigid winters. Due to the presence of a large mountain range, "the Keel" beginning in the northeast curving westward to the Fjord, Kvaerness also receives extremely heavy snowfall. Along the Alexandrian Fjord, the climate is less extreme. The Highlands, which comprise the interior of the country, is generally stereotyped as rainy and foggy.
[edit] Transportation
Cormac Cromarty Intl., Wyndhaven
3,730 Ships (79.03m dwt)
The capital, Wyndhaven, is in the center of the nation and the hub of both air and rail traffic. Cormac Cromarty International Airport is the nation's major international terminal, with local flights to other major cities available from CCI. It has proven impossible to link Kirkvaerness, the northernmost major city, and the surrounding areas to the rest of the nation's train systems. The most common form of transportation to the northwestern corner of the nation is by airplane. By tonage, the Republic has Europe's largest merchant fleet. A significant percentage of this fleet, however, is owned by foreign conglomerates who take advantage of the minimal business duties imposed by the government.
[edit] Tourism
22.1m visitors per annum
Tourism has not traditionally been an important sector in the Gunnish economy, however many Europeans are intrigued by this country considered by so many to be on the fringe of European culture. The Republic's reputation as being a "dangerous" country also attracts adventure-seekers. In recent years, therefore, the traditional villages of the Highlands have experienced a boom in tourism. The Republic does not extensively promote tourism.
[edit] People
Urban/Rural - 38%/62%
Most Gunnish live in rural areas, and agriculture remains the most important economic sector. Gunnish lifestyle traditionally centers around a nuclear landowning family. The independent 'yeoman' farmer is the archetypical Gunnishman in literature and television. Recently efforts have been made against traditionalist forms of slavery, often called investiture, of young women within clan groups. The Gunnish Clans have declined in political importance, but remain dominant in some areas of the Highlands and continue to elect a monarch. According to government estimates, Clansmen comprise about 1/3 of the population. The Republic receives many immigrants, many political exiles that continue to strengthen the popularity of Carsonism at home. Daracnians and Kheionians have traditionally comprised major sources of this immigration, and have found assimilation easier than Erlangen-Ansbachers, the third-largest historical group to emigrate to the Republic. Currently, the Norse comprise the largest immigrating population, surpassing recent trends including Shahlepis, Arkhangelskayans, and other residents of the former Gunnish overseas commonwealth.
[edit] Politics
Gunnlandia has traditionally been a libertarian country, and the modern dominance of libertarian doctrines are often interpreted as reactions to the nation's experiments with fascism, socialism, and most recently liberalism that triggered the Revolution that brought First Citizen Carson and his allies into power. Democracy exists in the Citizens' Congress, which exists alongside the revolutionary Directory, an unelected body of five members of the dominant Revolutionary Party that have the power of ensuring democratic decisions adhere to the libertarian constitution. The Revolutionary Party is predominant on all levels of politics, aided by its paramilitary group the Special Defense Organization.
[edit] European Affairs
European Union, Free Europe
The most recent incarnation of libertarian government is unique in that it possesses an international vision of global disarnament and libertarian world government forged through an international Revolution. This vision has led many nations to view Gunnlandia as a threatening pariah, much as the communist governments of the 20th Century (and some that survive in modern times) are viewed. Carsonism has also clashed with communism itself, as competing for the soul of what both groups see as a working-class Revolution against the current order.
Gunnlandia is also an important member of the European Union, having spearheaded its reorganization. The Republic has contributed two presidents to that body, more than any other country, though these have traditionally had disagreements with the Wyndhaven government. The Republic has also founded Free Europe, the precursor to the libertarian world government theorized by First Citizen Carson.
[edit] Aid
Gunnlandia gives aid to libertarian movements through Free Europe, which also contributes to humanitarian operations.
[edit] Defense
The Republic has one of the largest European military forces, and compulsory military service for all those who choose to be citizens. Wyndhaven has proven willing to cooperate with regional allies for its security concerns, but is not hesitant to dispatch the enormous ground forces of the Army of the Revolution, which is responsible for the defense of Daracnia and Gunnlandia. The most professional and well-funded force, however, is the navy, which has used a recent conflict in Great Britannia to prove its prowess in power-projection to other regions.
[edit] Economics
One of Europe's largest economies, the large agricultural sector is extremely profitable due to the increasing rarity of agricultural economies in Europe. Grain is exported to Kheion, Daracnia, Aartrijke, Erlangen-Ansbach, and scores of other European countries. These are Gunnlandia's largest trading partners. Partly due to frosty relations with Azores, products from the AFR are often transported through other countries like Kheion.
[edit] Media
No censorship, in theory.
Two major national networks.
The Directorate of the Interior operates an Information Office that monitors all press organs in the country, and the Director notifies editors what the government considers subversive, dangerous, or misleading content. The government is constitutionally unable to prohibit any information from reaching its citizens, though editors are usually complicit due to the reputation of Wyndhaven for using extra-legal means.
[edit] Crime
Gunnlandia has one of Europe's worse rates of violent crime, predominant in rural areas less effectively policed by the Special Defense Organization, which acts as a national police force. Incarceration rates are high, but due to the legality of narcotics they are still similar to overall rates in other European countries. The death penalty is not licit except in the context of Revolution.
[edit] Education
There is no public education system, and the Wyndhaven government supports a "seperation of school and state" in order to ensure information is not manipulated by the government. Private schools are comparatively cheap and profit-oriented, except for those of the Alephite Catholic Church, many of which are free. The Church is funded by business groups, as consumers expect them to take socially-responsible roles.
[edit] Health
Socialized medicine is also a foreign concept to the Gunnish, and health-insurance is provided by most employers, again due to the activism of consumers. Gunnlandia's health system is comparable to most European countries in sophistication, though it is no longer exemplary due to lessened cooperation with industry leaders in Eiffelland.
[edit] Wealth
The rich-poor divide in Gunnlandia is massive, mostly because the Republic is home to many of Europe's elite class of the super-rich. Still, the prosperity of businesses trickles down due to the activism of consumers who demand businesses tithe to the Catholic Church, provide healthcare benefits, and keep wages on par with other European countries. Consumer organizations are allied with the countries labor unions, and along with large chambers of commerce are part of a tripartiate Carsonist economic order.
