Ancient History
From Nizheroes
In the beginning of time, when the world was still young and forming, two forces were aligned: the Gods and the Titans. The Gods represented abstract concepts, and existed as beings of faith and inspiration. The Titans were beings of pure elemental energy and creation. Both sides worked to shape the world into what it would become, but there inevitably came conflict.
Over the barely formed surface of the world, a great battle arose between the two forces. The Gods fought to bring enlightenment to the burgeoning life on this new creation so that it might bring them praise and thus power. The Titans fought to allow the vagaries of existence to decide themselves, for good or ill, because the nature of the Titans did not require veneration.
The battle raged for centuries, possibly millennia, with neither side able to make notable progress toward victory. However, the power of the Gods began to fade without faith and prayer to support them. Their long lives hinged upon completing the creative process that was interrupted by the conflict and they could not sustain their full strength any longer. As the Gods waned in power, the Titans pushed forward in their offensive and crushed most of the Gods with their unwavering might.
A few Gods survived the onslaught and fled to a place beyond knowledge to escape the Titans’ wrath. With the age-long war finally ended, the Titans finished shaping the world and life upon it, then each found a place of solitude to rest. Few of the Titans slept upon the world itself, but a few chose places deep in the world, high in the air, or other remote and wild places to sleep. There they have since slept and dreamt alien dreams of creation and flux. From their dreams, elemental beings rose to populate obscure corners of the world and from their insensate presence flows arcane energy.
The Gods have not been known to the world in any tangible presence since the Great War, but throughout history many apparent ‘Prophets’ have received visions or dreams that portend to some of the Gods’ having watchful eyes on the world. The validity of these claims is ever in dispute, though there are some who hold faith of greater beings coming to bring an enlightenment to all and ushering in a glorious age.
