Strengths

• Free • The wiki software that Wikipedia is based on • New regular updates • Extensive help pages with plenty of technical advice • FAQs • Hosted by a not-for-profit organisation called WikiMedia Foundation (Board of Trustees includes Jimmy Wales) • Won’t share any private data with any third parties

Weaknesses

• Unlike EditThis wiki software you have to download Media Wiki to your own server • Not very clear after downloading how to set it up • Complicated, technical instructions • Lots of updated version to keep downloading • Not easy to restrict access so would all have to be public • Pages or information that is ‘deleted’ stays on the wiki

Opportunities

• May be useful if a technical expert read through all instructions • By saving on to your own server you could control the structure and information on it

Threats • As MediaWiki is really aimed at supporting Wiki media Foundation it will change due to their needs and not general users • All dependent on personal server space, support and the Media Wiki updates and changes
