Fexlig

From Monsterbook

This diminutive flying creature resembles a tiny, naked elf with dragonfly wings. It carries a puny curved knife and flutters about while drooling uncontrollably.

The fexlig is similar in appearance to a very tiny pixie or other woodland sprite. They are sometimes called "feral faeries," as they are voracious carnivores with a taste for living flesh. Fexligs do not eat their own kind, but aside from that anything is fair prey.

Strategies and Tactics

A fexlig will use it's spell-like abilities to put potential prey to sleep, then move in close for a coup de grace attack. A fexlig who succeeds with a coup de grace slices a piece of flesh off his target, then will attempt to fly away with it to feed. Because of their tiny blades, a coup de grace from a fexlig has only a small chance of killing the target.

Fexlig Lore

Knowledge (Nature)

DC 11: This fey is carnivorous and feeds on living creatures.

DC 15: This result reveals all fey traits, including their vulnerability to cold iron.

DC 20: They are ineffectual combatants but can cast magical sleep spells to incapacitate prey.

Adventure Hooks

While adventuring through the woods the PCs draw the attention of a fexlig hunter (1st level ranger with species enemy humans). He harrasses the party each night, waiting until they set up camp, then targeting the guard(s) with spells to put them to sleep so that he can slice a meal off one of them. He continues to track them each night until they stop him somehow.

An elf rogue (immune to the fexligs annoying sleep abilities) strikes a bargain with a family of fexligs. Together, they ambush travelers on the less-traveled roads. The fexligs get the elf's aid in combat, helping their supply of meat. The rogue helps himself to the traveler's valuables.

Ecology

Fexligs will eat just about any living being that is not another fexlig. They dwell in forests, roaming about, using their sensitive noses to detect the recent passage of anything alive and therefore edible. They require food and water, but do not sleep. The average fexlig is 4 to 5 inches tall and weighs about a pound.

Society

Fexligs are shunned by other fey because of their penchant for eating them. Grigs and sprites will band together to try to wipe them out should any appear in their territory. Fexligs are usually independent, living alone or in a family group of 4-8. They rarely form larger communities for very long.

Typical Treasure

Fexligs have no need for treasure and are too small to carry anything particularly valuable. Their sole possession is a diminutive-sized carving knife that is treated as a scimitar.
