Regeneration (Ex): Bloodspawn trolls take normal damage from fire and acid.
Blood Spawn (Ex): In addition to regenerating damage to itself, the blood of a bloodspawn troll will regenerate into a normal full-size adult troll. Whenever the bloodspawn troll takes damage from a slashing weapon, a troll forms adjacent to it. The newly-spawned trolls use the statistics for trolls as found in the Monster Manual except that it has maximum hit points equal to the amount of slashing damage that created it.
Self-Rend (Ex): As a full-round action the bloodspawn troll can pierce itself with both claws and rend its own body open to spawn trolls from its blood. While the bloodspawn troll deals full damage from both claws and from the rend, only the amount of damage from the rend counts as a slashing attack for determining the hit points of the new troll. For this reason it is reluctant to perform this action on itself.
This giant appears to be a normal troll grown to huge size, but its regenerative abilities are incredibly enhanced. A bloodspawn troll views normal trolls as lesser creatures, and itself as a "true troll" or even a troll deity of some sort.
Strategies and Tactics
Bloodspawn trolls are somewhat more restrained than their fearless, reckless spawn. If it knows that a difficult fight is about to start it will self-rend itself a few times to create some minions. Once it sees its opponents it will command its spawn to attack, following closely behind.
It will close into melee as soon as possible, since it lacks any ranged attacks. It's primary target is spellcasters, and it will attempt to rend or snatch them (if they are small), using either bull rush or awesome blow to clear the way. It's second priority is any melee combatants using non-slashing or flaming weapons.
Adventure Hooks
A mated pair of bloodspawn trolls lives in the nearby mountain. They regularly get into brutal fights that usually end in several troll spawn falling down the mountain as they attempt to rend each other to bits. Dazed, hungry trolls keep wandering into the nearby communities.
An archmage has been holding a bloodspawn troll in his tower for experimentation with regeneration. Somehow, after one of his experiments, one of the lesser trolls--that was created from the bloodspawn troll's blood--gained the same spawning ability as it's parent. It quickly multiplied, overpowered its captors, and escaped. The archmage needs it tracked down and captured alive.
Ecology and Society
Bloodspawn trolls live in lairs either alone or with one or two mates. They dislike having any of their lesser spawn in the lair because they become competition for food (bloodspawn trolls can consume lesser trolls, but they receive no nutrients from them). Newly-spawned trolls are born with only one immediate sensation: hunger. So they will immediately attack any living thing they see.
Bloodspawn trolls prefer cold mountainous regions, but are capable of thriving in any environment. The average bloodspawn troll is 22 ft. tall and 3000 pounds.
