"Once upon a time" - four words which connect all of us to our childhood - a time when we believed in fairy tales, magic and scary things that go bump in the night. As we grow up, we still encounter these things - only now we call it reality! Into The Wood combines several fairy tales into one story full of many differnt meanings. On the surface it appears simply to be the story of Cinderalla, Jack and the Beanstalk, the Baker, and other storybook characters and their adventures. But Into The Woods offers the audience something that goes beyone fairy tales - it offers each person that watches a mirror that reveals hopes, dreams, fears. and disappointments. We learn how to deal with rowing up, losing leoved ones, dealing with fear, holding on to dreams and reaching goals. In preparing Into THe Woods, we the direcors, cast, and crew have taken our own personal journey "into the woods" in an attempt to discover hidden talents and first we never knew existed. As in the story, we encounted giants and wolves, but found no one is alone when we all work for a common goal. The path has not been easy, and the directors would like to thank tha cast and crew for all their hard work and dedication to this project. Many of the seriors on this stage celebrate their third and fourth MCHS musical with Into The Woods. This show is a tribute to an amazing group of students who have helped build this yearly tradition into something so special. Many of you have so instrumental in building the Arts in this school into such a strong program. THe community is grateful. The Spring Musical has been one of their playbrounds of life - so many lessons learned. Into The Woods is dedicated to those fine students. So, we would like for you to go Into The Woods with us and share in the adventures of the characters you will meet - not forgetting that there is a little bit of all of us in each of them.

An ambivalent Cinderella? A blood-thirsty Little Red Ridinghood? A Prince Charming with a roving eye? A Witch...who raps? They're all among the cockeyed characters in James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim's fractured fairy tale. When a Baker and his Wife learn they've been cursed with childlessness by the Witch next door, they embark on a quest for the special objects required to break the spell, swindling, lying to and stealing from Cinderella, Little Red, Rapunzel and Jack (the one who climbed the beanstalk). Everyone's wish is granted at the end of Act One, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later, with disastrous results. What begins a lively irreverent fantasy in the style of “The Princess Bride” becomes a moving lesson about community responsibility and the stories we tell our children.

With plenty of unforgettable roles, transpositions on demand and no chorus, “Into The Woods” is a great way to showcase a talented ensemble cast. And since the show's emphasis is on character rather than spectacle, it is equally at home in large or intimate spaces. One of Sondheim's most popular works, this timeless yet relevant piece is a rare modern classic.

Paper Mache

The ITW set was a huge uniset designed to look very earthy and organic. Part of this effect involved many square feet of chicken wire and paper mache. Paper Mache, for those of you who haven't done it, is a messy and tedious job. Crew assigned to paper mache either got into the creative aspects of it and looked forward to making progress, or whined the whole time. <grin> Al
