Koopa Shell

All Koopas wear a Koopa Shell. Depending on the game, this can be separated from the Koopa or the Koopa encouraged to withdraw inside, and then picked up and thrown. In 2D Mario platformers, they harm and kill most enemies while moving along the ground, and bounce off walls and other objects. In 3D Mario platformers, their use varies.

Template:Main When Yoshi eats a shell, he gets special abilities.
- Green Shell: just a projectile for Yoshi.
- Red Shell: when Yoshi spits a red shell out, he breathes fire.
- Blue Shell: gives Yoshi wings to fly with.
- Rainbow Shell: when Yoshi jumps and lands with one of these in his mouth, it makes the ground quake.
The Yoshi's color also has an effect on what ability it obtains when eating a shell. For example, if a Yellow Yoshi has a red shell in its mouth it will be able to spit fireballs and make sand clouds when stomping on the ground.
