How to make Potassium Cyanide

Chemistry Guy!QZWHjU9OZw 11/05/11(Sat)02:57 No.53443

I was going to make a DIY image, but this will suffice. If someone wants to screencap and post it later on if it's requested then that's fine too.

BACKGROUND

I'm a chemical engineer. I've synthesized many compounds before (I mainly design machinery to do it, but at university I had to do the basics) and as a result I have extensive knowledge in how to create almost any compound.

DISCLAIMER

I do not condone the illegal or harmful use of this substance. Everything I write is assuming you know the proper precautions of chemistry, you are knowledgeable in chemistry and its products, and you will not use this product to conduct any sort of harm on anyone. Note that this isn't one of those 'lol blow into mustard gas and make crystals!'. I'm telling you now that not doing this properly will kill you in a matter of minutes. So be careful. Wear safety glasses, wear a gas mask, use a fume hood, lab coat, gloves, etc.

Now that's out of the way, let's get started.

Potassium cyanide is a remarkable compound. It works incredibly well in restoring some metals, the main one being gold. This is why many jewelers have it on hand, because it is excellent for restoring gold rings and the like.

Further disclaimer: What you are creating is extremely deadly, and can kill you in minutes, so take all proper safety precautions when synthesizing and handling the compound.

Also, I will not go into detail on how to actually take out this experiment. It is assumed you will know this as a responsible chemist. I will merely give you the steps and the ingredients.

INGREDIENTS

  1. Ammonia
  2. Formic Acid
  3. potassium hydroxide

These can be bought online with ease. They don't ask questions, usually. If you're afraid they will, shop around and don't buy all the ingredients from one place.

STEP ONE

Combine ammonia and formic acid to produce ammonium formate

HCOOH + NH3 + HCOONH4

STEP TWO

Heat ammonium formate to produce formamide (CH3NO) and water (H2O)

STEP THREE

Pyrolyse the formamide to produce hydrogen cyanide + H2O. Note that this step is extremely dangerous, so wear a gas mask or if available, do it under a fume hood. I will also note that the hydrogen cyanide is a gas at 298.75 K, so an ice bath might prove useful unless you have the proper distilling equipment.

STEP FOUR

Collect the gas, and neutralise it with the appropriate quantity of potassium hydroxide. This will be exceedingly hard if you have not titrated a gas before, so as I stated above, try and get it (and keep it) in liquid form.

STEP FIVE

You now have aqueous potassium cyanide. Simply boil it to obtain the solid.

That's all there is to it. Please be careful when conducting this experiment. If you do not have the proper qualifications, have someone with you who, at the very least, has a science degree and has done undergrad chemistry. You are dealing with exceedingly deadly chemicals here.

I considered that, but the potential risks are merely on the creator themselves. It's actually quite hard to commit murder with this, as the compound needs to be pure when given to someone. Furthermore, it takes almost three hours to actually kill a person. The 'kills in minutes' is referring to it making you unconscious, but you don't actually pass for quite some time.
Furthermore, all this information is readily available on the internet. So I'm not handing unknown knowledge to people. It's there and anyone can access it. I just made it a little easier to read as journals are extremely hard to read to the average person. I don't believe a textbook would have this, though.

On a similar note, if you do not have chemistry background, these instructions would prove useless. 'pyrolyse formamide' is extremely vague, and unless you know exactly what that is and exactly what to do, you won't be able to do it properly let alone titrate a gas. This is an advanced experiment and only someone who has done (minimum) three years of chemistry would do it correctly. To actually get to the point where you have the HCN gas you would have to be either lucky, you're naturally intelligent or you are a chemist.
