Bush administration and a consortium of tech companies have vowed to drive down government and corporate data centre energy usage by 10% by 2011. It is recognised that information will grow over time, thus it is vital to tackle the energy usage issue. The Energy Department and members of the Green Grid have signed a memorandum of understanding to work together over the next three years to develop a common set of metrics and tools for measuring data centre energy consumption and to obtain energy saving assessments. It is thought that these improvements will not only help in meeting the 2011 target but will also reduce CO2 emissions by 6.5 million tons per year.
