[edit] Background
Over the Edge was the culmination of various scripted plots and storylines. Before the event, several WIW professional wrestling matches and stories were played out on WIW programming: Dynasty, Turbo, and Sunday Night Xplosion. These narratives created feuds between various wrestlers, casting them as villains and heroes.
The main narrative for On the Edge continued the events that unfolded at previous episodes of Dynasty, St. Valentie's Day Massacre and the Whiplash, WIW's previous two pay-per-view event, held on February 14, 1999 and April 25, 1999, respectivly. The Wednesday after New Year's Evil, Kevin McAlmond confronted his father, Mr. Brain McAlmond about getting a WIW Championship opportunity against then-champion Kyle Johnson, Brian McAlmond would declined his younger son's request, telling him he was too young to win compete for the World Championship, through the next month, Kevin continued to confront his father, but would also be declined the opportunity at the title. Kevin McAlmond would form the The Grim Reapers and begin feuding with his father's The Corporation. At St. Valentine's Day Massacre, Mr. Brian McAlmond scheduled Kevin McAlmond, Dustin Simpson and Terry Bouchard to facing his group his Corporate Team of Ken Bushnell, Brad Eckert and Jim Jardine by disqualification in what he was labeling a "Corporate Punishment" tag team match. The Grim Reapers defeated The Corporate Team by disqualification when Eckert used a steel chair on Kevin McAlmond's shoulder. Later that evening, during the Steel Cage match between Stone Cold Steve Williams and Mr. Brian McAlmond to determine the #1 contender to the WIW Championship at Wrestlepalooza I, Kevin McAlmond cost his father the match allowing Stone Cold to escape the cage and get the shot at the championship. On the final episode of Dynasty before Wrestlepalooza, Mr. Brian McAlmond scheduled his Corporate Team against Kevin McAlmond and Stone Cold Steve Williams in a gauntlet match, Brian McAlmond ended up pinning Kevin McAlmond to win the match. At Wrestlepalooza, Kevin McAlmond defeated The Corporation (Eddie Traylor and Beau Snellman) in a 2-on-1 Handicap Hell in a Cell match after interfereces from an unknown masked person, later that evening, Kevin McAlmond accompanied Stone Cold Steve Williams to the ring and aided him to win the WIW Championship. Through the next few weeks, Mr. Brian McAlmond continued to deny Kevin McAlmond a shot at the title. On the April 7 episode of Dynasty, Kevin McAlmond and one of his teammates Dustin Simpson defeated WIW Tag Team Champions Marshall Hibbard and Michael Fox, and The Corporation's (Eddie Traylor and Rick Ledoux) to win the WIW Tag Team Championship. On the April 14 episode of Dyansty, Kevin McAlmond sent a challenge to his father for the Whiplash pay-per-view, to pick a member of the Corporate Team to face him in a match of his father's choice, if Kevin McAlmond losses, he would leave the WIW, but if he wins, then he would get a shot at the title at On the Event, Brian agreed. The following week, Brian McAlmond revealed new members to the Corporate Team such as Rod McAlmond, Billy McAlmond, Erica McAlmond and other McAlmond family members, he also announced that T.J. McAlmond would be the one to face his son in No Disqualification match and also announced that Billy McAlmond would serve as special guest referee. At Whiplash, Kevin McAlmond defeated T.J. McAlmond to earn a shot at the WIW Championship at On the Edge. Through ongoing weeks on Dynasty, Mr. Brian McAlmond continued to have his Corporate Team attack Kevin McAlmond. On the final Dynasty before On the Edge, Billy McAlmond, Rod McAlmond and T.J. McAlmond defeated Stone Cold Steven Johnson in a 3-on-1 handicap match with Mr. Brian McAlmond as the referee, Billy pinned Williams to win the championship.
