The IWE Cruiserweight Championship was a professional wrestling championship originally used in World Championship Wrestling and later, International Wrestling Federation/Entertainment (IWF/E). It was challenged by cruiserweights at a maximum weight of 225lbs. Following the acquisition of WCW by the then-IWF in 2001, it became a IWF (and later, IWE) championship and replaced the IWF Light Heavyweight Championship. During the first IWE Brand Extension, it was the only title to be exclusive to the SmackDown brand during its entire tenure.
It existed in WCW from 1996 until 2001, but after the WWE purchased WCW, they considered the WCW Light Heavyweight Championship's lineage to be one and the same as the Cruiserweight Championship's, thus beginning its lineage in 1991. In WCW, the inaugural champion was Shinjiro Otani, but the WWE officially recognizes Brian Pillman, who was the inaugural WCW Light Heavyweight Champion, as the inaugural Cruiserweight Champion. It was retired in 2007 with Hornswoggle as its final holder.
A new IWE Cruiserweight Championship was created in 2016, and although both championships share the same name, the new championship does not carry the lineage of the original.
