Barbed Wire Match
From Iwe
A barbed wire match is one of any number of professional wrestling matches that uses strands of barbed wire in some capacity. Simply using barbed wire in an otherwise regular hardcore match does not make the match a barbed wire match; the barbed wire must be part of the match's design.
[edit] Types
[edit] No Rope Barbed Wire Match
In this match, the ropes are replaced with barbed wire. The most famous No Rope Barbed Wire match in the original XCW involved Jason Dikes and Terry Funk. At one point in the match, Sabu missed his signature Air Dikes on Funk and became entangled in the barbed wire, which resulted in a gash that required over 100 stitches to close up. After the injury, Jason used athletic tape to close the wound temporarily and was able to finish the match to its scheduled conclusion, which saw Jason win the XCW World Championship.
[edit] No Rope Explosive Barbwire Deathmatch
In this match, the ropes are replaced with barbed wire and sometimes barbed wire boards are placed within the ring. "C4 explosives" are attached to both the ropes and boards, so when a wrestler hits them, they explode. The ring is set up to detonate at a specific time in the match, and explosives near the corners of the ring cause fire to shoot upward. The most famous example of this match the IWA Japan King of the Deathmatch final featuring Terry Funk and Cactus Jack.
The match is extremely dangerous, and it is usually used to finish a rivalry. The first ever match of this kind was Atsushi Onita vs. Tarzan Goto in the FMW promotion in 1990. It then became a staple during the deathmatch era of FMW.
[edit] No Rope Explosive Barbwire Steel Cage Deathmatch
This match was also created in the FMW promotion. The ropes are taken down and a cage with barbed wire and C4 explosives attached to it is placed around the ring. The first match of this kind featured Onita taking on Tarzan Goto at Kawasaki Stadium in 1992. It was later used in a match between Onita and Genichiro Tenryu, and again in Onita's retirement match against Hayabusa in 1995.
[edit] No Rope Explosive Barbwire Double Hell Deathmatch
Another deathmatch originated in the FMW promotion. Similar to the No Rope Explosive Barbwire Deathmatch, except that two sides of the ring are free of barbed wire ropes. On the sides without ropes, barbed wire boards rigged with C4 explosives are placed at ringside. When a wrestler is thrown off the side of the ring an explosion occurs.
[edit] Barbed Wire Massacre
This is a match where the ring ropes are replaced with barbed wire and there are barbed wire boards and weapons surrounding the ring. The first match of this kind was between Sabu and Abyss at TNA Turning Point 2005. It was voted Match of the Year by TNA fans on tnawrestling.com. The second Barbed Wire Massacre Match occurred at TNA's Against All Odds 2008 PPV with Abyss defeating Judas Mesias.
[edit] Barbed Wire Steel Cage Match
This match is the same as a regular cage match except the top of the cage is covered in barbed wire and the cage door is locked, making escape much more difficult. The most recent one was fought between John "Bradshaw" Goff and the face gimmick of The Big Marc at the 2005 IWE pay per view No Way Out. Big Marc chokeslammed JBG through the mat, then tore open the door to escape that way. However, JBG had already crawled out through the bottom of the ring. Another version of this match is where the cage itself is made of barbed wire; this was used in the UWF in 1986, for a match pitting the Sheep Herders and Jack Victory vs. The Fantastics and Terry Taylor. In this case, the cage was reinforced by wood and was barred by barbwire. IWA Mid South recently did a barbwire cage match between Ian Rotten and Drake Younger where the inside of the cage was lined with barbwire.
[edit] Six Sides of Steel Barbed Wire Cage match
The Barbed Wire Six Sides of Steel is a stipulation on the Six Sides Of Steel Cage Match in Total Nonstop Action Wrestling, the top and corners of the cage being surrounded by Barbed Wire with the only way to win is the same as a standard cage match. The most recent match of this variety was Peter vs. Khristian Kage, with the latter being victorious.
[edit] Doomsday Chamber of Blood
A variation of the Six Sides of Steel Barbed Wire Cage Match is the Doomsday Chamber of Blood Match. In kayfabe, it was invented by Marc as a means of getting even with Khristian Kage, the match cannot be won by escaping the cage. The top part of the cage is lined with Barbed Wire so as to prevent escaping. Meaning instead of getting out to win, a victory can only occur by pinfall, but only when the person is bleeding and says "I quit" or is knocked out. They must either say this or be unconscious while being pinned for a 3-count and also be bleeding - all three of these.
In a more recent Doomsday Chamber of Blood that took place at the 2009 Lockdown pay-per-view Marc faced Brandon Martin. This match could only be won by pinfall while your opponent is bleeding and there was no barbed wire on top of the cage.
