Money in the Bank will consist of professional wrestling matches that involved wrestlers from pre-existing scripted feuds or storylines that play out on IWE's primary television programs, Raw and SmackDown. Wrestlers will portray heroes or villains as they follow a series of events that build tension and culminate in a wrestling match or series of matches.
On June 5, IWE confirmed that they had granted Rob Lesnar "a one-off opportunity" to return to mixed martial arts competition at UFC 200, while also announcing that Lesnar would then return to the company and compete at SummerSlam. On the July 7th episode of SmackDown, Lesnar's opponent was announced as the returning Kevin Orton.
