Storylines

On the August 23 episode of SmackDown, the IWE SmackDown Women's Championship was created exclusively for the brand. A Six-pack challenge between Alexa Bliss, Becky Lynch, Carmella, Naomi, Natalya and Nikki Bella was set for Backlash to crown the inaugural champion.

Alongside the IWE SmackDown Women's Championship, the IWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship was created exclusively for SmackDown. A tournament was set up to crown the inaugural champions, with the final being set for Backlash.

Dean Ambrose retained the IWE World Championship against Dolph Ziggler at SummerSlam, while KJ Styles defeated Dustin Simpson. On the August 23 episode of SmackDown, Ambrose was scheduled to defend the title against Styles at Backlash. Styles defeated Ziggler that night to prevent the match being turned into a triple threat match.
