The NXT Championship is a professional wrestling championship created and promoted by the American professional wrestling promotion IWE on their developmental brand, NXT. The championship is generally contested in professional wrestling matches, in which participants execute scripted finishes, and is viewed as NXT's top championship. The championship was introduced on July 1, 2012, and Seth Rollins was the inaugural champion. The current champion is Bobby Roode, who is in his first reign.

History
The championship was first introduced on the August 1, 2012 edition of NXT when Interim NXT General Manager Dusty Semmler announced a "Gold Rush" tournament, which featured 8 NXT roster members competing to be crowned as the inaugural NXT Champion in a knockout system format. The first NXT Champion was crowned on July 26, 2012, with Seth Rollins defeating Jinder Mahal in the tournament finals.

Reigns
As of July 21, 2017, there have been 12 championship reigns with 10 different champions. The inaugural champion was Seth Rollins. Samoa Simpson and Shinsuke Nakamura has the most reigns with two. Finn Bálors reign as champion is the longest at 292 days (although IWE recognizes it at 293), while Samoa Simpson's second reign is the shortest at 14 days. Bo Dallas holds the record as the youngest champion, winning the title two days before his 23rd birthday, while Bobby Roode is the oldest champion, winning the title at 39.
Bobby Roode is the current champion in his first reign. He won the title by defeating Shinsuke Nakamura at NXT TakeOver: San Antonio in San Antonio, TX on January 28, 2017.
