The championship was first introduced at the March 7, 2018, tapings of NXT when NXT general manager William Regal announced a ladder match at NXT TakeOver: New Orleans to determine the inaugural champion. Later that night, Ethan Carter III, Killian Dain, Adam Cole, Ricochet, Lars Sullivan, and Velveteen Dream were announced as the participants in the match.
