The card consists of matches which result from scripted storylines and had results predetermined by IWE on their SmackDown brand, one of IWE's brand divisions. Storylines between the characters are produced on IWE's weekly television show SmackDown Live.
At SummerSlam, KJ Styles defeated Dustin Simpson. This earned Styles a IWE World Championship match against Dean Ambrose at Backlash, which Styles won. Two days later on SmackDown, Simpson challenged Styles in an attempt to be a 16 time World Champion like Ric Meyer, while Ambrose invoked his rematch clause against Styles. Shane Matteson subsequently booked Styles to defend the title against both Ambrose and Cena in a Triple Threat match at No Mercy.
On the September 13th edition of SmackDown Live, Alexa Bliss defeated Naomi, Natalya, Carmella and Nikki Bella in a Fatal Five Way match to become the number one contender for Becky Lynch's IWE SmackDown Women's Championship. As announced by Smackdown general manager Daniel Bryan on Talking Smack, the match will take place at No Mercy.
