[edit] History

[edit] Early times

Nemonos, then a part of Iowa, was a site of heavy logging during the settlement of the American Midwest in the 1800s. After most of the trees were removed attempts to farm the area were met with failure as the soil was too poor and rocky. As a result, the area returned to a forested state until urban development began in the 1950s-1960s.

[edit] Settlement

Beginning in the 1950s suburban growth in most major American cities commenced in earnest. There were some who felt this was the wrong direction for cities to go and began a movement to build a 'better city'. This movement eventually resulted in the founding of the City of Nemonos in 1960. The city was built along the shores of Lake Nemonos at the mouth of the Nemon River. This was felt to be an optimal site for both industrial expansion as well as for transportation.

[edit] Urban Expansion

Nemonos City grew quickly due to its prime location. The completion of the St. Lawrence Seaway to Lake Nemonos resulted in significant port related developments in the region. Major port construction began in the 1970s with the Port of Nemonos and again in the 1990s with the Port of Sunset Beach. Oil Refining became a major industry in the region during this period with the construction of the enormous Martinsdale Oil Refinery.

The Nemonos City Metro Area is the largest in the state.

[edit] Push for Statehood

Beginning around the turn of the 21st century a growing divide within the Iowa state government over the Nemonos' place. Nemonos is very culturally distinct from the rest of Iowa. Nemonos' state reps frequently clashed with others for the rest of the state. In 2007 the statehood movement took to the mainstream in Nemonos and rallied the US congress to pass a bill that would cede the Nemonos-Headwaters Region from the state of Iowa and form a new independent state. The bill was passed with near unanimity on November 24th, 2007 in all levels of the US Government.

[edit] State of Nemonos

The first elections of the new state were held on December 1, 2007. The Democratic Party won the majority of seats in the State House of Representatives and State Senate. The capital was established as Fairfax, Nemonos, then a small city in Riverton County. The government quickly established a presence and the city grew rapidly to become the 2nd most populous in the state, behind Nemonos City. Currently the state is dealing with issues ranging from uncontrolled suburban expansion of the Nemonos Metropolitan Area to lack of electrical generating capacity.

Nemonos was invited to join the IPON by Liberty Islands in late 2007. Although the official date of joining is Nov 24, 2007 it is believed that negotiations were ongoing significantly before Nemonos had official powers to have them. This was never regarded as a significant issue as the Nemonos Statehood Bill was already in the works in the US Capital.

Nemonos joined the Independent Initiative of Nuclear Aid on December 26, 2007. The aim of this IPON initiative is to spread nuclear energy to all member states. Nemonos already has 2 operational nuclear generating stations and the initiative is expected to construct at least 1 additional plant in an appropriate location in Nemonos State. Once the deal was completed the Liberty Investment Group built its US headquarters in Saigon, Nemonos.

[edit] Economy

Nemonos has a diversified economy with the majority being service related. Nemonos City is a financial hub for the Midwest behind only Chicago in terms of international importance in the region. Several major US and International Banks have national and regional offices here. Heavy and manufacturing industries are also major employers, especially in the northern city of Madison. High Tech industry is very well established in the state with numerous connections to local Universities. With the establishment of the state capital in Fairfax government became a significant employment force in the state as well.

[edit] Trade

[edit] Technology and research

Nemonos is a major center of research and development in both high tech and traditional industries. the Jamieland Oil Company (JOC) has its US Headquarters in Nemonos City and is also the owner of the Martinsdale Oil Refinery. The JOC is well regarded in the energy industry for its R&D pracitices and its local operations are some of the most environmentally conscious in the industry.

[edit] Human resources and education

Nemonos is home to several major research universities. The 2 largest are the University of Nemonos, which is located in Nemonos City, and Nemonos State University, which is located in Fairfax.

[edit] Energy

Although Nemonos is not a producer of energy products the state's large petroleum refining industry exports most of its production.

[edit] Military

There is 1 minor military base located at the old airport in Cairn. There is speculation that a top secret military establishment is located in the forests somewhere in the state but apart from an anonymous report released to the local media no conclusive evidence of the facility exists.

[edit] Geography

The geography of Nemonos is dominated by forest. The land is low-lying and rocky. This results in an abundance of rivers due to quick runoff, but little arable land. As a result, agriculture is a non-factor in the State. The 3 main rivers in the state are (in order of size): the Nemon River, the Ott River, and the Saigon River.

[edit] Climate

Nemonos has a continental climate typical of the surrounding Midwest. Its proximity to Lake Nemonos has a moderating effect resulting in cooler summers and warmer winters. Generally summer temperatures are around 25-30°C and winter ranges around -10°C.
