Album Synopsis

The second life of Fidel Castro begins with an old Castro tiring of his responsibilities in Cuba, faking his own death and leaving for America to see what he has been fighting all this time. He begins a 2nd life, returning to school, falling in love and eventually marrying and settling into a suburban American life. The narrative skips forward to the end of Castro's 2nd life as he sits considering all that he has done, and all he left behind, and finally returns to Cuba to die, for good, in Havana.

Castro was originally conceived as a continuation of the themes of V: The Meandering Notes of Men in Goats, now that the association has gone its entirely possible that so will lots of other stuff.

History

The Second Life of Fidel Castro was initially to be the sixth full length release from Mamareeko X. Bench, and throughout 2008 a 12 track release by this name was pretty much finished. Bench felt, however, that corners had been cut and that to rush the album out with so many regrets would be unfortunate. The decision was made to divorce the record from the Bench name entirely, mainly because it didn't much sound like a Bench record anyway, and after the planned renovations would definitely be something quite different.

The 2009 Version

History

The second attempt at recording the album began in late 2008, with a complete rerecording of the title track and Dead in Habana. The results were good and so plans were made to remake the entire record. During this process new tracks and older sketches previously discarded were added to the melting pot, and other tracks cut. As such the finished tracklist is, as of early 2009, undetermined and subject to extreme change.

One other dilemma arose during the reevaluation of the record- Schlock] had previously considered the concept of demos for ISM songs something that was strictly not allowed, going against the ethos of the music. However he then remembered that various projects are littered with tweaked and reappropriated versions of previous songs and so got down off his high horse and got on with things.
