The use of titles in Lithuania / Portugal.

In Portugal, the use of titles is very common and important. Everyone who has a degree is called " Dr\\a ", even if they aren't really "doctors". Nowadays, many people have a degree so there are a lot of " Dr\\a\\s " in our country. If we work for a company and ask a superior for something we should say "Dr", but if we talk with our colleagues we just call them by their first or last name without the title.

In Lithuania titles are not often used. Lithuanians use invocatory titles such: “ponas” – which means Mister; “ponia” – Misis; and “panele”- miss. Other titles are connected with certification degree. The person, who is teaching at university or other high school, is called “dėstytojas/a”, if he/she has a higher degree than the previous one, he/she is: “lektorius” – a lecture. It is not common to use these two titles in salutation. Only if a person has PhD, then the salutation to this person is “profesoriau”, which means professor. Or the person could be called a doctor, which is used in the name of his/her science name. (Usually doctor’s degree is one step lower than a professor’s).
