There are two Melquiades, and both are associated with Aureliano and/or his personal history

The first Melquiades was the leader of a traveling gypsy merchants that came across Macondo in search of new business. He became a long-time family friend of the founders of Macondo: the Buendia family. He wrote a set of parchments in Sanskrit that could only be deciphered once they aged one hundred years before his death. The parchments were deciphered by Aureliano Babylonia, but a Leaf Storm blew Macondo out of existence the minute they were read.
