Terra Magna is the planet known as Terra/Earth on the Baseline Universe. It is the current centre of operations of the Freikorps. It is located in the Orion Arm of the Milky Way Galaxy. It resides within Sol System, inside the Core Worlds Special Administrative District. It is a center of interuniversal trade and communications.

Planetary Environment

Terra Magna of 2261 is an idyllic place on the surface. 99.7% of the Terran planetary system's population (Terra Magna, Luna, and Orbit Colonies; 11.4 billion, total) lives in an gigantic system of city-stations in orbit about the planet, which form rings radiating out from the planet's celestial equator. The stations are arranged in synchronus orbits about the planet, in neat and concise rings. Each ring of stations are serviced by trains which can shuttle people to and from any of the stations in a particular ring.

Terra understandably possesses the heaviest defences in the entire Terran Sphere. In addition to Home Fleet, Terra's defences include the six massive Cross Stations as well as thousands of smaller orbital fortresses, and the sprawling fortress on Luna, the largest of Terra's defence stations composed of the entirety of Terra's only natural satellite. Outside of the rings in Terran orbit are six massive orbital weapons platorms, over 900 km in diameter, each in geostationary orbit 85,000 km from the planetary surface. Each of these stations is bristling with weapons and houses thousands of fighters as well as communications equipment capable of reaching across half the galaxy. Each of these stations doubles as traffic control points for the massive amount of shipping in and out. In addition to these stations, a series of MADISON Cannons were installed near each of the stations as a further precaution.

The use of nearly half a million military traffic controllers to track traffic is quite necessary, as billions of defence drones cluster around high earth orbit, ready to be activated at an instant's notice. After several incidents where merchant ships purposely ignored orders and were shot up by drones for their trouble, traffic control became a military perogative, making disobeying the flight plan lesser treason, and punishable by anything from twenty years incarceration to execution by firing squad.

Luna

Main Article: Terran Military Installation Luna

Terra's only natural satellite, Luna, has been hollowed out to serve as a massive shipyard and space dock complex. At the centre of Luna's core is the headquarters of the Terran Home Fleet, as well as the headquarters of the Freikorps. The area around Luna is restricted space, and home to a ring of R&D labs, notably AWDL D-R and the Jotenheim Yards, a complex capable of creating up to Super Dreadnought scale experimental warships.

Surface Overview

The surface of the planet has mostly been left untouched. To keep ecological impacts to a minimum, land on the surface is kept prohibitively expensive to the private market, ensuring that land ownership on the surface is nothing more than a bragging right for most. Nature has been allowed to reclaim most of humanity's legacy on the surface, and most of it is taken up by the rambling estates of the noblity and the vast military headquarters of the Freikorps, with the exception of several areas. Two particular exceptions are the Military-Industrial Districts, home to Lockheed-Engelmann Heavy Industries and Skoda-Krupp-Rheinmetall, two of the largest arms manufacturers and shipbuilders in the Terran Sphere. Though the Terran Alliance governs over the entire planet, making national divisions defunct, individual cities such as Hong Kong, New York City, Tokyo, Warsaw, Military College New Sandhurst (London), Berlin, Tehran, Cairo, and Rio de Janeiro are still prominent and of galactic class.

Sentient Species Overview

Main Article: Terran(Species)

The Terran species, technical label Race 001001, are bipedal mammals viewed as the definition of the "Galactic Norm" in regards to sentient species. Other species similar to this are Takaran and Formosan. Terran civilization originated on Terra Magna and began colonizing outside their system after the Monosian Invasion propelled them head first into the category of Galactic Class Civilization, which they are still in the first stage of. Secular and socio-cultural developmental type-rating are not assigned to this planet, as it is the basis from which the Developmental Type-Rating System is drawn.

Terran culture varies widely due to its dispersed and elastic nature. Common trends include a rooted concept of the nuclear family, leadership based on a imperial military structure, and a focus on progress over tradition. The average male height as of 2250 was 184cm (~6') and average female height is 173 (~5'8").

History

Main Article: History of Terra Baseline

Terra and human civilization went through a gigantic paradigm shift after the Monosian Invasion of 2048-2056. Whereas before, human civilization had been centered on the aquisition of already attainable resources and the damage of the whole for individual profit, resulting the in the atrophy of ideals of unified defence, the sight of their world crumbling around them while each nationed bickered with each other was enough to force the popular unification of Terra's peoples. Ironically, they were helped by this by the Monosians; the same extremist factions that plagued mainstream government in the pre-invasion period also proved to be a bane for the invaders as well, who promptly scoured the vast majority of them off the face of the planet.

The Terra that came out of the invasion had learned three very important lessons:

  • We are not alone, there are others out there.
  • Some of them want to kill us, they will not negotiate, we will have to kill them first.
  • The ends justify the means when the result is the survival of the human race.
This resulted in a unified force which was terrifying in it's fury and merciless in it's vengeance. When the Terran counterattack breached Monosian defences they immediately set the entire planet to a sword of antimatter carpet bombing and orbital bombardment, not ceasing until they literally blasted the planet apart with an anger that even set aback Terra's Vykkian and Mydean allies.

As a result of the Monosian Wars, human civilization has become an evolved version of itself. The military and government have risen in social estimation. Those considered anti-establishment take great care to make sure that they are not considered anti-military. Those who are openly pacifist, or against technological progress (Technological advancement at all costs is considered one of the few things keeping Terra independent.) are often branded as traitors, suffer discrimination and are sometimes even kidnapped from their homes by extremist groups then unceremoniously shipped outside the borders of the Terran Sphere, where they are then quickly hunted down and killed by Terra's enemies.

Government

Being the homeplanet of the Terran Sphere, Terra Magna is also the seat of government for the Terran Sphere. The government type is labelled as Constitutional Monarchy. The capital city is Hong Kong, which is home to Terra's triumvirate of ruling councils: The House of Lords, made up of appointed nobles, the House of Commons, made up of elected representatives and the General Staff, made up of the senior military leaders.

The House of Lords is the senior house, but it is also the one with the most restrictions due to the fact that it's members are made of of hereditary nobles. Normally, the House of Lords is only used to "Rubber Stamp" the bills made by the Commons, however, the influence of the Lords is on the increase since the appointment of Duke Strathcona as First Star Lord, essentially giving him vast amounts of influence in the Lords and it's traditional enemy, the General Staff.

The House of Commons is comprised of popularly elected representatives, each representative represents 50 million inhabitants, this means that there about half a dozen representatives for the majority of the lightly populated worlds while a core world like Centauri Alpha has 38 representatives and that Terra herself is represented by over 150 councilors, making sure that the interests of the homeworld are firmly represented.

The General Staff is composed of the 6 most senior military commanders of the alliance military. Although usually seen as a junior branch of the government, the General Staff is actually the most powerful of the three branches during a time of war (which is always) under the Defense of the Homeworld Act (DOHA). The General Staff is headed by the First Star Lord of the Admiralty, the senior officer of the Battlefleet. The Second Star Lord also represents the fleet while the CiC Marine Corps (Usually a Field Marshal) and the Chief of Planetary Defence (A General) represent the marines. Finally, the CiC Fighter Command and the Commander of 1st Fighter Command (Sol System) represent the pilots and crew of Fighter Command.
