History

The Duchy of Strathcona was created in 2088, during the Third Terran Civil War and given to the supreme commander of the Baronies, Field Marshal Albrecht Tannenburg. The fief itself was the amalgamated land of several noble holdings in Eastern Canada and the northern British Isles. Following the establishment of the Terran Alliance by the victorious Baronies at the Treaty of New Sarajevo in 2096, the Duke of Strathcona was one of the only peers allowed a fief on Terra Magna. Through the 22nd century, House Tannenburg built itself up around the Dukes of Strathcona, and established itself as a major political power within the Alliance Parliament. Due to the large amount of political capital this allowed the House to amass, many scions of the house went into the Military, creating a solid power base in both civilian and military administrations. By the end of the 22nd century however, the house's fortunes began to wane, an unfortunate series of marriages and accidents left House Tannenburg spiraling deeper and deeper into debt and disfavour in eyes of the Terran aristocracy. This slow decline came to a head in the disastrous Battle of New Ankara and the subsequent death of Duke Trafford Tannenburg-Strathcona in 2198.

Following the Battle of New Ankara, the title passed to his younger brother, Eric Tannenburg, who was, at the time, a promising Commodore in the Alliance Battlefleet. Although expected to rise to a sufficiently high rank and then fall to mediocrity like so many of his predecessors, the new Duke rose meteorically, instituting a series of military reforms that not only increased the Battlefleet's effectiveness immensely, but also won him promotion first to Fourth, and then First Star Lord of the Admiralty. However, it was his nephew Milgar Tannenburg-Strathcona who would fully rebuild the fortunes of the great house, calling to mind in many the strategic brilliance and political savvy of his ancestor Albrecht Tannenburg. Milgar had been raised by his uncle after his father's death, and followed him into the military, succeeding his uncle as First Star Lord by the age of 39 and surpassing him, serving as Prime Minister ten years later.

The assassination of the man who would be the last Duke of Strathcona was a sharp blow to the family. Although Eric Strathcona once again became head of the family, the title of Duke Strathcona has died with Milgar.
