Ten years ago, Elm was involved in an incident involving a man who had been infected with a high level of Hinamizawa Syndrome and was put into a coma and almost died from her injuries. After she woke up, her biological parents disowned her. They didn't want to believe that she was actually their real daughter. In fact the only person in the room was Ashuhito Richter, the boy who happened to lose a leg in the same accident that put her into a coma and her childhood sweetheart. However, after she had woken up, she had amnesia. She doesn't remember what happened or her life up until then, she was, in a sense, reborn.
Since that day, Ash and Elm haven't been apart. They have been in search of the doctors that had walked out right before Elm had woken up. The ones that had given up all hopes of her ever recovering from the tragic accident. Despite Elm's outer appearance of a sweet and innocent girl, due to what she is, she is a monster if you get on her bad side or if you do harm. She can actually, if the situation calls for it, rip an arm off the perpetrator.
Elm had been to Hinamizawa a few times in the past when she was young. However, this was her first trip since being brought back to life.
