Planet Defensors
A Planet Defensor (known cumutively as a Planet Defensor System, or PDS) is a small disk drone that operates outside direct contact with the Mobile Weapon. Only useful in groups, usually of 3 and more to make a barrier, they arrange into geometric shapes to deploy an electromagnetic forcefield. This forcefield, when deployed, generates the field between defensors. It is this field that makes the defensor system useful in combat, although the batteries in each defensor drain quickly when actively protecting requiring charging after short use.
The PDS's energy field is capable of protecting from light to moderate damage, including from both projectile weapons and particle weaponry. The only weakness of the field is that it does not protect against older high-energy laser weaponry. The only reason that lasers are equipped to attack suits protected by this system is that they suffer from extremely rapid overheating in combat, often leading to the weapon exploding in use. Planet defensor fields are also breeched by melee attacks, suggesting that it takes a certain amount of force (either constant, like a weapon attack, or focused like a laser) to break through the electro-magnetic field.
The OZ-13MSX2 Mercurius mobile suit was developed as a testbed for the planetary defensor system by OZ in AC 195. The tests were successful and led to the system to be later integrated into the OZ-02MD Virgo mobile doll. The Virgo on its own could only generate a shield that protects from fire in one direction (as one Virgo only carries four defensors). Three Virgo units working in concert were able to deploy their defensors in a globular shield, which was also possible with the Mercurius (which carries ten defensors.). OZ later developed an advanced variant of the Virgo, the WF-02MD Virgo II, which carried eight defensors per unit; this machine was stolen by the rebel group White Fang and is often associated with them. Modern usage of defensors has remained steady, although advances in beam shield technology has rendered them antiquated and often designed for cheaper mass produced grunt units.
