Party: Hero, Girl (Defensive Magic) and Sprite (Offensive Magic)

Battle: Real time. Each time you attack, your power recharges back to 100%. Basically you need to wait for power to recharge. Also if you hold down the power button you can charge up a Power attack. When charging up power attack you move slower and its possible for enemy to cancel your powering up.

During combat you can bring up ring menu to select spells/items. You can only hold upto 4 of each item, however the need to use items is reduced as you gain more spells. For example, one of the first spells you get is to heal. Some spells add effects to weapons, for example Ice Saber will turn enemies you hit with your weapon into snowman.
