[edit] Introduction

Joel never had any idea what he wanted to do when he grew up except leave this place. His dad works down at the co-op, and his mom stays at home and spends her time between kids and church functions. He's the second child of five; his parents believe in big families. They believe in a lot of things, not all of them strictly in line with what their church teaches.

He'd always been pretty good at academics, and he had a decent singing voice, so when he got to high school, his mother encouraged him to try out for band. He did- and to their great annoyance, ended up playing cello, which meant they had to shell out considerably more money than they were expecting when they, who knows, mistook band for choir? Anyway, he found some good friends and had fun. They lived far enough out to have a little patch of woods, and he used to head out down there on nice days to practice; once he got good enough not to screech, sometimes the neighbors who lived up the hill would come out to watch. Nice old woman, gave him cookies and punch sometimes, and more importantly, gave him his first real coherent dream: to get good enough to join a symphony.

Eventually he graduated, with decent grades even, but not quite good enough to get a full scholarship if he went to one of the places he really wanted to go. His parents thought he was crazy for wanting to go to school for music, much less out of state, and told him in plain words they would not support that sort of thing. So he took a chance, got a part-time job... and after a year, it was clear he wasn't going to make it. He dropped out, then couldn't get enough hours to keep himself in food and shelter. He sold his instrument for enough money to move back home.

His parents were not pleased; the job market was not exactly better back home, and his parents had apparently made a big show of what a failure he was. After a couple of months, they kicked him out. He was pissed, but what can you do? He wandered around for a while, doing odd jobs, staying with friends every so often and running out his welcome, until finally he found people willing to help. Scary people, people that deeply frightened him for some irrational reason, but people nonetheless.

And then they killed him. Well, shit. Now what?

So lift up your noble hearts with laughter and song
And may your days be brighter and your nights be not so long
For your joys were just as welcome here as woes you would forget
And when you wept, we wept with you, and so will we yet

[edit] Descriptions and Elaborations

oh and I know this of myself
I assume as much for other people
oh and I know this of myself
we've listened to more of life's end gong than the sound of life's sweet bells

Age: 20
Basic Description: Average height, lanky, tanned and freckled, sandy brown hair and dark blue eyes. Wears whatever's clean.
Personality: Kind of quiet, sort of a practical bookworm, polite. Not-quite-secretly bitter.

Geist:
The Trespasser. Guy in a Prohibition-era police uniform, stained with dirt and blood, bulletholes in various bits, eyes and mouth sewn shut. Big city police officer, moved to a small town, poked his head into things that weren't his business, ended up dead in a cornfield.
Keystone:

Backgrounds:

Memorabilia- Robert Johnson's guitar, the one he was playing the night he died. Works with Passion, +5 to Expression rolls.

Vanitas- A song he composed before he had that guitar or anything else, to forget about the fact he hadn't done anything musical in months. He's never actually played it, just keeps fiddling with it every so often.
