The Sanctus Contendo was originally first mentioned in the Purifier Elite short story "Firestarter", and it refers to an ancient form of combat taught to monks of the former Sixth Kingdom where the monk would allow themselves to become mostly possessed by heroic spirits that have long since passed. In the Purifier Elite Corps, the Firestarter Unit was trained in the sacred art and use it in teams of two to face their challenges. One member acts as support, the other as offense, and usually could be interchangeable.

This premise of teams of two channeling spirits is the premise behind the Sanctus Contendo CCG. Players have a team of two Character Cards that can channel spirits (equip hero cards) and their abilities. The stronger the level of synchronization, the better abilities could be used. One player would act as offense, and the other as support, and once per turn, players could rotate their Character Cards and swap support.
