From the game Super Mario Bros. for the NES.

If you go past the first cliff in 1-1, run nearly to the next cliff, and then turn back when about a one block space is left between the block above you closest to the first cliff. Turn back and hit the Goomba above you. If done right, the Goomba should turn into a shell when it is hit.
