Sliding down the stairs

From the game Luigi's Mansion for the Nintendo Gamecube

Run up a flight of stairs really quickly, but stop in the middle. Now, don't hit anything and if done correctly, Luigi will start to strangely slide backwards, falling back step by step... We've only tried this in the main stairway.
