Bridges

[edit] Introduction

You have a river running through the center of a map. You want land units to cross it, so you create a bridge. Done deal, right? Wrong. Battalion offers a number of ways to create a bridge, each providing different strategies.

[edit] The Regular Bridge

The regular bridge tile is labeled “bridge” in the map editor. Bridges provide 0 defense and are very vulnerable to attack. Bridges can only be built in straight lines. However, two bridges next to each other can be crossed by any land unit, something that most Advance Wars map makers may not realize. Bridges also do not need to be entered from the ends. If there is a shore below a bridge, a unit can enter that bridge from the shore just as easily as from the plain next to the end of the bridge. Long stretches of bridges are generally a bad idea, since they are easy to clog and don’t offer a lot of strategic options for the player. One idea to spice up long stretch of bridges is to place one or two buildings in the middle of these bridges. They give bridges strategic defensive positions and reduce tile uniformity.

[edit] The Shore Bridge

The shore bridge is one of the strangest aspects of Battalion. Any land unit can cross two shores, despite the fact that it appears there is sea between them. However, any naval unit (and for the matter, any air unit) can also cross these bridges. What this means is that naval units can be used as very important blockers over shore bridges. Shore bridges bring naval units more into a map, adding additional strategy over that of regular bridges.

[edit] The Neutral Docks Bridge

While this is not really a bridge, a neutral docks can become a de facto bridge in pre-deployed maps. A neutral dock with sea on both sides allows land units to travel in one direction while naval units can travel in the other direction. It is a bridge that is extremely versatile and provides for a large defensive bonus for whoever controls the bridge. It can also be used in maps with the capability to build units with some careful forethought.
