Terminals

From Flight From Darkness

Terminals are not artifacts themselves, but facets of one of the larger systems which comprise The Dream of Sweet Rain. There are hundreds, if not thousands of terminals throughout the ship, and they serve many different functions. Unlike ordinary magitech devices, these do not require an attunement cost; the terminals are powered by the core of The Dream and owned by the ship's core AI.

[edit] Standard Utility Terminal

Known as Stutters (Standard Utility Terminals) by much of the crew, the Standard Utility Terminal is the most common interface on the ship. Usually built directly into the walls of structures, larger rooms or along hallways, these terminals have a number of very basic functions.

Announcements Display - The standard display shows ship-wide public announcements. These announcements are typically unsigned, but are distributed by the Bridge Crew.

Environmentals Display - Selecting another tab will bring up a number of ambient measurements, including humidity, barometric pressure, the on/off status of nearby systems (Sector Lights, Sector Atmospherics, Sector Pressurization, etc), motonic verisimilitude (to Creation), and a list of integrity meters for physical laws.

Alerts Display - During any general or sector alert, this is the default display. This screen intermittently flashes a bright red along with the emergency announcements released.

Sector Data - This display is an interactive informational page which provides public, unclassified details about the sector and structures within it.

Public Map - A map of The Dream of Sweet Rain.

Login Functionality

Every registered resident of The Dream of Sweet Rain possesses an account with the ship's systems; some possess more than one account, as befits their duties. Entering your registration data and password into a Standard Utility Terminal allows any crew member to access several account functions-

Ration Account - This page tracks how many ration points an account has unexpended. Using this page, crew members may also transfer rations to other registered accounts simply by entering the name of the desired recipient.

Private Messages - This page contains announcements from the high-ranking officers to individual crew members or groups thereof. Most people only ever receive group announcements pertaining to their plate or job.

Biographical Information - This page is a copy of the crewman's public dossier. Crew are asked to review it once every few months and submit a report to the archives if there is a significant problem.

Report Function - Nobody is entirely sure who receives messages submitted from this page, but all accounts receive a message instructing crew to use it in cases of severe emergency only.

Notes Function - This allows a crew member to access their saved public documents.

Other Functions - Many crew members have other pages, such as monitoring data about their station or administrative pages relating to a crew detail they lead.

If a crew member moves further than five meters from a terminal without logging off, the terminal will automatically disconnect.

[edit] Advanced Processing Resource Terminal

These terminals differ from Standard Resource Terminals in that they are never found in public areas and always require a login to access. Certain crew, most notably the engineering and botanical segments, are allotted a certain amount of the ship's processing power to construct models, run formulas and even submit questions to the ship's AI. These terminals are typically located in areas relevant to technical or maintenance duties, as well as office spaces.

Among those who use them- technical and creative staff- it's typically referred to as "APaRT", as in "We'll have to check APaRT before we go any further on the project..."

[edit] Manual Area Control Terminals

MAC Terminals often require some form of scan or key in addition to a login- this is because they control the environmentals, power, structure and other ambient systems. These are usually found in control centers in each Plate, and typically control either a single vital system or a suite of related systems.

[edit] Access Terminals

Usually just called 'keypads', these small wall-mounted terminals usually control access to a single door. The majority of the doors on the ship are unlocked, but override codes may be punched into these terminals to seal many public accesses. Certain areas which are supposed to be locked (such as maintenance tunnels) often feature broken keypads and can be jammed open.

Since relatively few Access Terminals require a personnel login, they are a favorite target of the criminal element. Teams of thieves or rogue groups often include people who have learned one way or another to bypass keypads.

[edit] Archive Terminals

These are mostly located in the archives, but most large work details have access to at least one. These all require a login and contain documents which are commonly used by nearby crew. These terminals do not have unlimited space, and high-ranking crew have a duty to review the documents stored within every few months to delete unnecessary files.

[edit] Personnel Terminals

Among the rarest terminals, these are personalized stations only accessible by one or two crew members. These have wildly variable functions, and are only found in the offices of the highest-ranking crew.

[edit] Security Terminals

These terminals are located in control centers across the ship and allow access to specific security information (alerts when certain doors are opened, motion detectors; virtually never cameras). These terminals only cover a single plate.

The security terminals found in the Tower levels are usually broken.

[edit] LI Terminals

These boring grey terminals are found in various places across the ship, all bearing a standard display of 'LI'. There is a login function, but nobody appears to have an authorized account.
