High Elves stand roughly 5-1/2 feet tall, with a slim, almost anemic build. Sylvan Elves are larger averaging 5-1/2 to 6 feet, and tend to be better muscled. Similar to the Sylvan Elves, the Grugarch are 5-1/2 to 5-3/4 feet tall, and tend to be stockier than most other elves.  Distinguishing elves from all other races of creatures is their non-reliance on sleep.  Typically elves enter a state of awareness which most sages liken unto meditation for 4-5 hours each night.  But unlike sleep, which is partly defined by unconsciousness, this meditative" trance" leaves the elf perfectly aware of all that transpires around him.    This trance is believed to be partially magical in nature,  and elves cannot be induced to enter sleep by magical means.  Because of the elf's partially magical nature, they benefit from some voluntary resistance to the effects of enchantment type magics.  Elves benefit from extremely long life spans, elves as old as 730 years have been recorded.

Although elves reproduce infrequently,  elven mothers often carry children in the womb for upwards of two years,  they have a very rapid rate of mutation.  This is also believed to be related to their weakly magical nature, it should be noted that over a period of roughly 1000 years, different tribes of elves may shift dramatically in appearance and composition.  For example, presently, the high, sylvan, and grugarch elves are all recognizably different sub-species, yet this divergence began only 1600 years ago, and encompasses roughly 12-1/2 elven generations.  There are six known such sub-species of elf, four of which are native to fellaor.  In addition to the those mentioned above, sub-terrainious Drow elves branched off from the other species much sooner in their evolution and Grey elves (which are more closely related to high elves) branched off relatively recently.  Finally, Aquatic elves, which are properly considered a separate species, are native to the oceans and lakes of southern fellaor, and arrived prior to the elven migration of  0 ESE.  Although disputes exist, most archeologists hold that the aquatic elves arrived in the period between 300 and 150 DSE (Dwarven Standard Era), most likely to trade metal with the existing dwarven settlements.

The Elves were the second people to come to inhabit Fellaor, doing so in year zero (0) of the Elven Standard Era. The first group of Elves to come to Fellaor were followers of the teaching of Algine the Wooded. They were chiefly refugees from the Ke-Ine War belonging to the naturalist faction. These elves further split into two distinct tribes, those who followed the Druid Penon, and became the Sylvan Elves, forsaking arcane magic entirely, and those who followed Peinin the Younger, who became the Grugarch. The elves settled along the western coast of Fellaor, and there forged a simple life based upon farming and hunting and gathering what is available. Both of the Forest elves take pride in holding simple societies, and behaving in ways that outsiders might term "primitive" Although historically this must be understood as happening partly by volition, as before Algine the Wooded, most elves dwelt in woodland cities, and subsisted primarily by farming. So the disdain for city life and the adaptation of community based tribalism among the Grugarch and Sylan elves must be understood as voluntary. Sociology Wizards have speculated that this trend was a reaction to the frequent plagues that struck eleven populations on Temaral prior to the period of migration and the Ke-Ine wars.

Following in around 540 ESE a second wave of elven migration occurred, this time of the fair haired high-elves, who had elected the path of civilization through magic. These elves settled in what is now modern Aragana, and founded Their First Colony at Elfairin in 543 ESE. From there are, at least three other groups of elves settled in Fellaor, founding the Cities of Aragana (552 ESE), Dalaran (562 ESE), and Marawane (583 ESE). At first relations between the Woodland Elves and the high-elves were peaceful, but hostilities soon broke out between the different groups. This ultimately led to the destruction of many high elven and woodland cities, some of whom may be lost to history. Because of their superior numbers, the woodland elves began driving out high-elven settlements, which became increasingly centralized. In order to resist the physically stronger Woodland elves, the high elves began hiring humans to serve as mercenaries, initially small bands of humans were contracted by the outlining high-elven settlements for mercenary work. Realizing the abundance of available land, these mercenaries soon brought their families over to settle in Fellaor, and soon a substantial human population began form in the 4 high-elven cities.
