The Steel Region

From Eran

Contents

Overview

Despite the rugged and unfriendly terrain of this region, the Steel Lands have been significantly settled for centuries. The primary reason for this is alluded to in its name: Steel. The mountains of this region are the richest providers of steel in Éran and has a rich source of other metals and stones as well. The Steel Lands is plagued by the highest concentration of blackfolk anywhere in Éran and though the powerful city-states nestled along the banks of Lake Onyx are usually capable of protecting their citizens from this threat, the city-states are as much a threat to each other as the blackfolk population as they continually vie for supremacy in the region. Beyond Lake Onyx, the Steel Lands belong to whoever has the military power to claim the lands, be it blackfolk, petty warlords or Rosgorth - currently the greatest cause for concern in the region, as its dark sorcerer-king looks to expand his base of power.

Overview: The bastions of civilization in otherwise savage lands, the cities nestled around Lake Onyx fasilitate the trade of steel from the Steel Lands to the rest of Éran and safeguard human presence in the lands. Were it not for military strength of the cities to protect not only their own citizens but also to keep the trade routes and mining lands relatively safe, the Steel Lands might very well be pure blackfolk lands today. Despite their threatening neighbors, the cities around Lake Onyx are as much a threat to each other as the blackfolk tribes, as they maintain a fierce rivalry often blowing into open skirmishes and sometimes even war, as each city tries to assert its position as the dominant power in the region.

Regional History: In ancient times, the Steel Lands were the home of the dwarven lords of Morazak, but they were driven out in the War of Dark Retribution more than 10.000 years ago. Since then, these have been mostly blackfolk lands until Brennèl began colonizing the region, erecting walled and secure cities around Lake Onyx to accomodate the movement of steel from the region. Under the rule of Errion, humans settled and dominated the region to an extent where the Steel Lands were considered safe imperial lands, with a number of major cities established on the banks of Lake Onyx and the lands beyond ridden of blackfolk. That all changed during the Third Magewar when it was overrun by blackfolk under the rule of Rosgorth. And when the Chaos Horde fell apart, the majority fled into the Steel Lands and claimed them as their own. When Errion failed to provide military aid, the cities around Lake Onyx found themselves isolated and by necessity: Independent. Nominally, some of them still belong to Errion who continue to make efforts to try and establish a foothold in the lands again, but in reality, the Steel Lands belong to whoever has the power to claim them.

Regional History: 50 years ago, Rosgorth was pure anarchy. A mixture of blackfolk tribes and humans bands warring against each other, Rosgorth posed little threat to anyone but themselves. Then in 2444, the wizard Yarzul entered Shurzol occupying the stronghold of the despot Zoryl who ruled from there during the Third Magewar and overnight declared himself the Sorcerer-king of Rosgorth. Within a month he had subdued all the various factions and tribes within his realm and within a year rebuilt the infrastructure of the state almost entirely, turning it into one of the industrial centres of Éran. Yarzul's allegiance however was purely to himself and whether blackfolk or human, you either served or died. 25 years ago, he invaded the southern and eastern neighbouring states and overtook them with lightning speed. When Errion and Elmir learned how the subjugated people were all either enslaved or brutally slaughtered, they attempted to invade the young dictatorship and wipe out the threat to the region swiftly. They met with much greater resistance than anticipated and since then have been in a state of perpetual warfare with Rosgorth, holding back their aggressive movements to the west and reducing the number of slave raids and potential for further invasions, as the border wars take up the majority of Rosgorth's military resources.
